Love and prayers update thread

I wanted to fill everyone in on how Pfeifer is doing and also just say thanks for all of the support. At the time I posted the original thread I was just so beside myself with grief and really didn't feel like I knew where to turn. I have been mostly a Lurker, so it definitely felt like I was going out on a limb a little bit. You all took me in with open arms and were just so helpful both for helping me cope, and also taking the time to lend your thoughts and prayers for my nephew. The story is really just amazing and we feel so fortunate, but also I can't help but feel for all of the kids that are still dealing with this stuff that were not so lucky. From what I have been told, there are some pretty severe cases where children will be on ventilators for life due to the illness. Now that the results are in from the CDC I am absolutely astounded and amazed, this is the info from the CDC:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From the Center for Disease Control: UPDATE on Acute Flaccid Myelitis

http://www.cdc.gov/ncird/investigati.../hcp.html#case

From August 2, 2014 to January 28, 2015, CDC has verified reports of 111 children in 34 states who developed acute flaccid myelitis that meets CDC’s case definition. CDC continues to collaborate with partners nationally to investigate reported cases, risk factors, and possible causes of this condition.

· The median age of the children was about 7 years.
· Almost all of them were hospitalized; some were put on breathing machines.
· Most patients had fever and/or respiratory illness before onset of neurologic symptoms.
· About two thirds of the children who have been observed (median 19 days) after their illness reported some improvement in symptoms, while about one third showed no improvement. Only one of the children has fully recovered.
· We continue to test specimens from these patients for a wide range of pathogens that can result in this syndrome.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are not sure whether or not Pfeifer is "the one" or if he is now the second case that has fully recovered. He has been cleared of all physical therapy and is considered fully recovered, but we are not sure whether or not the therapists have updated the CDC or not.

Once again, thank you all so much.

Sounds like a terrible disease. In your original post I thought they had told you it was a complication from the flu. Did that end up not being correct?

I leave on May 4th, at 5:49 pm from Kansas City International going to Chicago O'Hare, then on to Copenhagen, and finally to Aalborg, arriving at 3:35 pm their time. Just 3 more months to wait!
