Looks like they made several moves. And this one was internal promotion of what sounds like an up and coming guy that was well deserving.
Kansas City Star CHIEFS May 26, 2017 5:52 PM Chiefs announce a number of personnel staff additions and promotions BY TEREZ A. PAYLOR tpaylor@kcstar.com The Chiefs announced a number of front-office additions and promotions on Friday. Among them was the promotion of Brandt Tilis, who will now be the club’s director of football administration. He replaces Trip MacCracken, who was not retained for 2017. Tilis joined the Chiefs in 2010 as a salary cap/contract analyst before he was promoted to the director of salary cap and football operations analytics. The Chiefs also hired Chris Shea as its salary cap and legal executive. Shea, who is in his 19th NFL season, was most recently the director of scouting administration and personnel scout for the Philadelphia Eagles, who did not retain him after the NFL Draft. Shea has also spent time with the Panthers, Jets, Cowboys, Dolphins and the NFL office. There were also a number of personnel staff members who received promotions with the Chiefs. That includes Ryan Poles, who was promoted from the college scouting coordinator to director of college scouting. Southeast scout Ryne Nutt was promoted to the assistant director of college scouting. Dan Zegers, a player personnel assistant, has been promoted to college scouting coordinator, while scouting assistant Jim Noel has been promoted to pro scout. Former communications intern Daniel Ricci has been added as a player personnel assistant. Finally, the Chiefs also made the hiring of Tim Terry official. Terry replaces Will Lewis, who was not retained after the draft, as the club’s director of pro personnel.

Chiefs name Ryan Poles Director of College Scouting
FOR THE RECORD: RYAN POLES
By Ron Wilson, staff writer Poetic justice. That’s what I prefer to call it. Most of us that follow local high school football continue to pay attention to the ensuing college careers, and in some cases the ensuing professional careers, of our local gridiron high school heroes. Most of us, therefore, are familiar with the continuing episodes of Canandaigua and Boston College graduate Ryan Poles. For those that are not, here’s a quick refresher. Poles had graduated from CA in 2003, earning a football scholarship to Boston College. In four years at BC, Poles had played himself into one of the more reliable interior offensive lineman on the Eagles’ team. Poles was attracting a lot of NFL attention his last two years at BC, protecting quarterback Matt Ryan, the eventual No. 3 overall pick in the 2008 NFL draft. Poles himself was being listed high in the projected draft lists that year. That was until a devastating achilles tendon blow-out in BC’s sixth game of the year at Notre Dame. At first downtrodden, Poles, with the encouragement of family and friends, dedicated himself to getting better and making a serious attempt at still getting drafted in the NFL the following year. As is the case with injuries to unknown commodities in the high-dollar world of the NFL, Poles wasn’t on anybody’s radar screen come draft day. He wasn’t drafted. A few days after the draft though, Poles found that he was being invited to a Chicago Bears pre-season mini camp. He parlayed that mini-camp invite into making the teams pre-season tryouts, making it all the way to the very last day of camp. He was one of the last to be cut from the team. “When I got cut from Chicago I went home for a bit,” said Poles earlier this last week. “It bothered me a little bit, but I was OK with it. I had a friend that asked me if I wanted to go to Alaska and I jumped at the chance. I went to California for a week and then we went to Alaska. It was so quiet and peaceful. It was good for me.” You could say that his trip up north recharged his batteries. He came back ready to get back to pursuing his dream of playing in the NFL. Shortly after his return from Alaska, Poles got a phone call from a friend of his at BC who was a graduate assistant in recruiting at BC. He was moving on and was wondering if Poles was interested in taking his place. “I said ‘Absolutely’,” continued Poles. “I knew everybody and everything about the school. I figured it would be a good fit for me. So I worked at BC for four months and was talking one day with the friend, Terry Kozial, whose place I had taken. He had moved on to the NFL working as an intern with the Tennessee NFL team. As I was listening to him talk about what his job was like, it seemed that would be a good thing for me too. It had never really crossed my mind, but all of a sudden becoming a scout made really good sense.” So he started talking with a lot of the contacts he had made over the last two years in his NFL pursuit and, making a long story short, he got interviews for positions with New England, Kansas City and Cleveland. “I drove to Boston, flew to Kansas City and flew to Cleveland to interview for scouting assistant positions with all three teams and then went home and waited,” Poles continued. “I got a few calls but they were all about the fact that no decisions would be made on any scouting positions until after this years NFL draft. Sure enough after the draft, Kansas City General Manager Scott Pioli called me up and offered me a scouting assistant job for the Chiefs.” In fact, Poles’ interview for this column was done Tuesday morning this last week, on the road with all of his immediate possessions loaded up in his car heading to Kansas City, wanting to get their by Thursday. The job started Friday. As much as he would have liked to be playing in the NFL, Poles says that he will like this new approach at being involved in the sport that he loves. “Their are definitely quite a few positives here,” he continued. “Number one, first and foremost, I don’t have to beat myself up anymore. This is a way to achieve my dream without beating my body up anymore. Number two, I can see where this will still feed my competitive edge. It will be real interesting to be involved with a team from the very beginning. See it grow from the beginning with help drafting the players and watching them grow to contribute to the team and watching that team grow, hopefully, into a championship team. One other thing that will be nice about this job will be the ability to learn from the best. Mr. Pioli will be a good guy to work for. Before Kansas City, he was involved in putting together that first Super Bowl team in New England. This will be a good place to start my career. He will be an excellent person to learn the job from. No doubt my path to the NFL has taken a different direction. But a good one. Their are a lot of people looking to get into this business. I was just fortunate enough to have had the right people to help me.” When talking with Poles over the years, I found that he has a real knack for making memorable quotes. Here is his latest. “If opportunity knocks you better sit down and become his friend.” Opportunity and Ryan Poles have become great friends. Your fix was a bit off. If you had put that the Earth is only 6000 years old despite what mistaken scientific theories tell you, then you would have had it it right.
