Some rules and background, Part 2 - Zones and Missions

A note about zones.

Mission lengths are measured in terms of “zones,” with each zone being the equivalent of approximately 40 minutes of flight. Zone 1 is always the airspace over Britain, which is completely safe from enemy fighters. The shortest mission is two zones, which is directly across the Channel in Occupied France. The longest missions into southern France and western Germany are eight zones. Recall that you have to make a round trip, so double the distance when weighing taking a sick day.

Allied fighter cover is available up to Zone 4, but not beyond. If you go beyond Zone 4, you’re fending off any fighters yourself.

Potential Mission Targets

During your first five missions, you will be sent on relatively short missions where you will be assured of the possibility of fighter cover. You will also not be sent into Germany itself, and will attack only areas in Occupied France.

There are six potential targets where you will be assigned during your first five flights. These are:

1. St. Omer, a coastal fighter airstrip just across the English Channel on the northeast coast of Occupied France in Nord Pas de Calais. Distance: 2 zones. Zone 1 is over England and Zone 2 is over the Channel and France. There is a high level of fighter defense in the target zone, which extends into the Channel.

2. Cherbourg, home to a fighter airstrip on the northwest coast of Occupied France in Basse Normandie. Distance: 3 zones. Zone 1 is over England, Zone 2 is over the Channel, and Zone 3 is over the Channel and France. German fighter defenses are low in the English channel and high in the target zone.

3. The inland railyards at Amiens in north-central Occupied France in Haute Normandie. Distance: 3 zones. Zone 1 is over England, Zone 2 is over the Channel, and Zone 3 is over France. German fighter defenses are low in the English channel and high in the target zone.

4. An aircraft parts plant in the inland town of Meaulte in north-central Occupied France in Haute Normandie. Distance: 3 zones. Zone 1 is over England, Zone 2 is over the Channel, and Zone 3 is over France. German fighter defenses are low in the English channel and high in the target zone.

5. A key fighter airstrip just inland from the coastal town of Abbeville in Picardie. Distance: 3 zones. Zone 1 is over England, Zone 2 is over the Channel, and Zone 3 is over France. German fighter defenses are low in the English channel and extremely high in the target zone.

6. A munitions plant in the inland town of Lille in Pas de Calais, on the border with Belgium. Distance: 3 zones. Zone 1 is over England, Zone 2 is over the Channel, and Zone 3 is over France. German fighter defenses are low in the English channel and high in the target zone.

Flak at all six sites is variable. None of these sites is a priority for flak guns, though you may run into heavy flak on occasion.
