If we even think about giving up a high pick for a coach, I'm going to do something drastic, and it's probably going to involve hurting myself.

I speak fluent Rufus. Here's the interview, unfiltered:
CHIEFS PRESIDENT CARL PETERSON Q: What are your goals heading into 2006? PETERSON: “I just think the obvious is the hope and desire to sustain the run of game day sellouts we've had since I took over this storied franchise seventeen years ago. In 2005 our offense was more than OK. The defense did improve this year. I think it was measurable on the field as well as off the field. I mean, off the field we didn't lose a single bar brawl. It took spit hoods and security guards with pepper spray to stop us. It is the goal to continue to work on aspects of the special teams, like not holding when we receive the ball, and tackling the opposing returner before he reaches the 40 yard line. And making field goals in Dallas. We can and will improve on that, but all of those things certainly go into my thinking of how we will reach our goal of 98% season ticket renewal for 2006. Oh yeah, and I also need to think about the selection of the next football coach of the Kansas City Chiefs.” Q: What are the Chiefs like cap-wise going into 2006? PETERSON: “We are going to be fine. We are a little heavy right now, quite frankly, but we plan to have a spring clearance sale...40 percent off on all caps in our Fan Zone shops during OTA's and Mini Camps. Hopefully the fans will buy all the 2005 crap and we can restock with new crap... Oh, you mean the SALARY cap.... yeah... Well, we have been through this the last couple of months on what moves we would have to make regarding the cap. One of the problems we have right now is that we are not sure what the cap number is because, as you know, the National Football League Management Council continues to negotiate with the NFL Players Association on an extension of the current CBA. When the NFLMC and NPA get the 411, FWIW, we'll review the CBA PDQ, but for now it's not a BFD. I think we are all anxious to know if that is going to come to fruition and we certainly hope so since it would have huge implications on the cap (wipes drool away).” Q: Do you anticipate a situation cap-wise when Dick Vermeil came in when where there were a bunch of salaries you had to unload with QB Elvis Grbac, DT Chester McGlockton? PETERSON: “Not to the same degree and again, we are working with a sliding number right now that the management counsel gave us which it said could go up based upon an extension of the CBA, so we don’t have a certain number, just like Elvis Grbac. First he was 11. Then he was 18. Nobody knows what the impact will be.” Q: Did you or were you going to ask for permission from the Jets to talk to Herm Edwards? PETERSON: “I am not going to comment on that speculation or who I am talking to, who I may talk to, or who I may not talk to. Or who I communicate with non-verbally, or who I may interrogate at gunpoint, or who sleeps with the fishes. I just would prefer to keep that confidential. I know that won’t help you, but that is what I am going to do. That is how I have done it in the past but I enjoy listening to your speculations. Go on. Speculate. Speculate some more....no, slower.. Speculate slower, that's it....ahhhhh.” Q: Did you talk to Al Saunders yesterday? PETERSON: “Who?" Q: Al Saunders. PETERSON: Oh, him. Yeah, I did and I thought it went well. Here's the jist of our conversation as it was leaked on the Chiefs Planet website earlier: Me: Al. Al: Carl. (awkward silence) Me: Got a plane to catch tomorrow? Al: Yeah, Minnesota, then Houston. Then Oakland. Me: Ok Then. Al: Later." So as you can see, It was a lot less formal and one of the reasons obviously is that I have known Al since ‘74. It went well.” Q: The way the offense has played the last five years and considering the defensive struggles are you leaning towards a defensive-minded coach? PETERSON: “I am not leaning towards offense or defense in any particular manner. I'm like a weebil. Weebils wobble, but they don't fall down. I am going to visit some people, but I won’t tell you who. You have to guess. And you have to start with 'Animal, Mineral or Vegetable', and have to guess within 20 questions. Or Bob Moore will take you into the bowels of the stadium, down by the leaky sewer pipes, and have you executed. There obviously are some people who are defensive when questioned. Some are offensive, or I should say, offended when I want to speak with them because I want them to hear what I have to say, and STFD.” Q: With all the offensive numbers that Coach Vermeil talked about, why wouldn’t you want to lock in Al Saunders? PETERSON: “Number one, we have a rule in the National Football League that I am going to follow. It strictly says, 'No handcuffing of coaches on the premesis.' This is, after all, a commercial place of business. We have to draw the line somewhere. There are also very many talented candidates out there that I want to interview, face to face. Make them an offer, they can't refuse. I owe that to the Family...uh I mean, the Lamar Hunt family. Al Saunders is certainly a candidate and a consideration. Like I said, I know Al’s strengths and his weaknesses. We know how to push his buttons. Make him crack. Whimper like a pussy. We had a very good interview yesterday and it’s not concluded. He knows we'll be back, unless he takes that offer from the Witness Protection Program. Al also needs to pursue some opportunities and take specific interviews that he has, and then there are other considerations more than just the offensive side of the football. He may try to leave, but we'll just pull him right back in.” Q: How many people have you talked to so far? PETERSON: “I can’t tell you that. I haven't been sober since Sunday morning. Been poundin the Pinot with DV for three solid days.” Q: With all the other openings around the league, clearly that makes more competition to get the best man this job? PETERSON: “Sure, but that happens every year, this year a few more than normal, if you will. Obviously, I want a candidate who wants to be the head football coach for the Kansas City Chiefs. One the fans can believe in. Year after year. No matter what happens. No matter how much disappointment, failure and regret comes their way. I’d like to think this is a pretty good place for any guy who wants to be a head coach in the National Football League. You can screw up, and come up short for 17 years like me, and never ever get fired. We have tried to over the years establish a very comfy workplace and it begins with the ownership and a very cushy situation. Hopefully that candidate will present himself and, like I said, I have some people I want to talk to, and whether they like it or not, and I AM going to talk to.” Q: Because there are so many openings won’t that make you move quicker than you otherwise would have? PETERSON: “No, I am not putting a timeframe on it and I can’t do that at this particular time. Threatening a coach's family buys us a lot of time. There are candidates that we can’t talk to right now because they are in the playoffs and there are some very talented people out there. The process will move along as swiftly as I want it to but I also want to make these guys respect me first.” Q: What about Gunther Cunningham? PETERSON: Who? Q: What is his status here? Is that going to be a decision that rests with the new head coach? PETERSON: “I am not going to speculate on that right now specific to coaches on our staff and who will be retained. I haven't found any little white envelops stuffed with money that's been slipped under my office door of yet. Underling coaches here know what it takes to be appreciated by management. Gun's only had 48 hours, and it's hard to arrange for a second mortgage during the holiday week." Q: Are all the assistant coaching contracts up in February? PETERSON: “They are all up. Everybody coincided with the head football coach. That was by design. I designed it that way. Brilliant, huh?” Q: Would you be willing to part with a first-round draft choice to get whoever you wanted? PETERSON: “Are you talkin to me? ARE YOU TALKIN TO ME???? DAMNIT, DON'T EVER TALK TO ME ABOUT fuckIN ME OUT OF ANOTHER FIRST ROUND PICK FOR A COACH. I'LL KILL YOU. HEAR ME? I'LL fuckIN KILL YOU...." Q: Would you be willing to do that though to get the coach that you wanted? PETERSON: “HUFF HUFF Huff....(dab with hankey) I am not going to speculate on anything specific to that right now.” Q: You said you talked to Al Saunders yesterday. Have you met face-to-face with anyone else? PETERSON: “Go fuck yourself.” Q: Is it also your thinking that this would be the last head coach that you hire? PETERSON: “God, I would think so. When Lamar and Clark Hunt asked me last year to re-up for another four years starting this February I said this will be the last ride in the big limo for me. I mean, I can only make so much money for these greedy, money grubbing....uh...I mean, I have been here a long time and love it and I have the best ownership in the National Football League and I think even outside the NFL, including all the casinos in Vegas. But, yes I certainly would like to think that this next head football coach is going to be here and be here longer than me, Carl 'Delano' Peterson...Longest Tenured General Manager In Professional Sports.” Q: Does that impart any extra urgency in your mind to the importance to get somebody that you would hopefully leave here past your tenure? PETERSON: “Urgency? URGENCY? I am looking for the best guy that I think take this franchise to the first game of the playoffs, and maybe make the other team punt at least one time. I am going to continue to pursue that, much the same way that OJ is still searching for the REAL killers. That is my charge and my responsibility and frankly, I look forward to it. Now get the Hell outta my office.” |

If Phildo was there, and didn't ask him how successful the 5 year plan to the superbowl, now being the "4 more year" plan....I'm disappointed.

This is a serious question:
"I think our defense did improve this year. I think it was measurable on the field as well as off the field" How is a defense measured off the field, I mean this seriously, I just wonder how you measure defensive improvement off the field. My only guess, since this is Perterson talking, is that this one is cheaper than the last 4 years? |

CP shouldn't have wasted his time saying he's not going to answer that question because of this or that etc...He should have said "Next Question" like Rosenhaus does! His interview would have been alot shorter!!!!!

I think that says it all. Carl wants an HC who will run the same O and keep Gun as DC. I don't think that was an endorsement of Gantz jr though. PhilFree
