Trip to Philly Area
I'm planning a weekend trip to Wilmington, DE sometime this spring or summer.
Anyone familiar with the Philly/Wilmington area? If so, do you have any advice you can give about it? Areas to avoid, anything fun to do in the evenings? Are there any casinos or other good nightlife spots around there? I haven't travelled too much so I don't know the first thing about how things are over there. |

South Street is great. Like a Westport sort of area, but much more "alternative"
Pats and Geno's famous cheesesteak shops are in the south Philly area. The place is really cool, filled with a bunch of "Guido's" though. Ask any cabbie to take you there. I prefer Pats.. Center City and Rittenhouse Square are your "downtown" sorta areas. Really nice hotels, great eats, nice parks, etc. I wouldn't stray much into the Western or Northern areas late at night. The Benjamin Franklin museum is really interesting (I went when they had the fascinating Body Worlds exhibit, but they usually have something worth seeing). Independence Hall is nice, if a little cliche. Get a pretzel in the PHL airport. They're actually pretty good.

2nd Rittenhouse. Try Le Bec-Fin there, although you really can't go wrong with a lot of the award-winning dining in Philly. I used to live in Manyunk; great sports bars and pubs there.

This. I have been. (Live outside the city)
Been mentioned but South Street is a great place to go. Big Charlies Saloon is owned by a Chiefs nut and on Sunday's Chiefs fans go there to watch the game. Walk in and tell them you're a Chiefs fan and you are family. |

I've spent some time in Philadelphia.
I hope I never do it again. With apologies to the congenial Philadelphians, no other city I have been in has such a high concentration of rude people. You should skip Philadelphia and go down to the Jersey shore. Cape May is nice. |

South Street is a nice nightlife area because there's so much concentrated in one area and you can walk everywhere. Travel in a group if possible.

I've been to Wilmington once. There's not much there except the shopping because DE doesn't have sales tax.
But its a short train ride from Philly (as you mentioned) and NYC. I think the ride to Manhattan was between 1 and 2 hours from Wilmington. If you go early, you can have a whole day in the big apple.
