20 QBs averaged a release time of under 2.5 seconds in 2015

.. up from seven QBs in the 2012 who had that average speed.

Quote:
Because demand outweighs supply, the simple solution of investing resources into the offensive line doesn’t guarantee success. Teams have been forced to explore alternate methods to make up for deficiencies up front, the most obvious of which is designing offenses that depend on the quarterback to get rid of the ball quickly.

According to Football Outsiders research, the Cincinnati Bengals had the most efficient passing attack in the league last year. Andy Dalton started 13 games and released the ball (on average) in 2.20 seconds, according to ESPN Stats & Information. That’s the fastest time since the stat was first tracked in 2011.
Fastest releases last season:

Not surprised at all. Smith has an excellent delivery.

Dumbasses (many whom are no longer around thankfully) liked bashing on him because he was a Niner retread in a long line of Niner to Chiefs retreads, but he is a pretty darn good QB who's done extremely well for this team.

Going to see more and more of that. Pass rushers are so unbelievably fast and athletic that QBs have to get rid of it quick as possible if they don't want to be crippled.

Also puts a premium on WRs that have the quickness to get open off breaks, without having to run themselves open because it takes too long.

This. I think he was the best option at the time, and a solid qb. He's not elite, and he may not have the best deep ball, but he's a gamer. Dude is way better than any Foles, Bradford, Sanchez etc that were/have been available since we took him. Although I wouldn't be mad if we would have drafted Bridgewater.

Sutton thinks that you should give the WR's a 10 yard cushion when a QB gets rid of the ball quickly.

Wade Phillips disagrees.

Smith was one of the fastest but he still got sacked almost more than any other QB in the league. Tells you what you need to know about the state of the current OL. Please find a solid starter at RT.

A quick release can be a blessing and a curse. It can also show an inability to go through progressions. Something I don't think Alex Smith is particularly good at. He may bail into a checkdown faster than he should. I'm sure it also has a lot to do with pre-designed quick plays, as the Chiefs run a hell of a lot of quick WR screens. Smith surprised me in being better at the pre-snap stuff (the Brady quick release). But he's not elite at this by any means.

So it's hard to read anything into this. Except to just hope Reid gives more and more control to Smith to make pre-snap reads and that Smith try to control games instead of managing them. When those things happen, good things seem to happen. But both seem to fall back to old ways more often than I'd like.

3 of those 5 guys are check down artists; so it makes sense why their release is so fast as its clearly part of their offensive scheme.

Really only Brady is the one quick releasing to expose the match up at the LOS.
