Did Monday Night Create a New "Success Model"?

I guess my question is did Monday night show that we should stop trying to be a "big play" offense, and instead be more a of "ball control" team that dominates with its O line?

With our receivers banged up and Priest getting taken out of the passing game by opponent scheme, maybe we would be more successful using our great O line to protect our D.

I actually kind of wonder that myself.... the only way to find out is to see what happens in Jacksonville in two weeks. I imagine that the plan will be somewhat similar... keep their good defense on the field so long that you wear them out...

Only if we want Priest to get injured. He can't take 33 carries every game.

Yeah...the guy who couldn't get a carry last night despite the fact that we ran it 46 times.

Not gonna happen exactly like that because DV has always kinda ripped that style of offense saying it wasn't varied enough to win you a Super Bowl unless you have an absolutely dominating D. DV has always said the biggest stat he looks at is margin of victory, and that your margin is very thin when you just pound the ball because that means you have less possesions and the other team can stay with you and win on a lucky play or two since the score will generally not be too high.

However, it does go back to something else that DV has said before, in that the team needs to better define what they do best and use that to their advantage. Sometimes we get too cute and forget to run the ball as much because we want to spread it around. That's fine. But what last night does is give us a better idea of our "bread and butter" plays that we can run consistently and succeed with. Saunders and DV have said the past few years that it takes a few games to settle into exactly what they can do the best and then they define that and refine that and use that to their advantage. That's what they did the last two seasons during the bye and that's probably what they'll do during this bye. They'll look at what has worked best and what hasn't through the first four weeks and try to refine their offense going forward around that. So I think it helps define that more, and you'll see us try to run the ball more and be a bit more physical and maybe use play action more, but I don't think you'll see us turn into a ball control team...

Yeah, I don't expect Martyball or anything... but I think we might run "downhill" (as DV calls it) more often. This team obviously does it well.

One opens up the other. Pound it down their throat, play ball control, then go for the occasional kill shot. The pass to Horn that got called back was an example of that, imo. If we can make teams respect the underneath stuff, respect the up the middle run, then we can open up some of the big gain plays.

I'm sure Al Saunders is licking his chops hoping that Jax thinks we're gonna try and ball control them. These guys will always be unpredictable. Kennison back in the game to stretch the field added to the emergance of Horn and Al's prolly getting a woody right now. Then when Wilson makes it back it will like Al on viagra.
