You're only too old when you start shooting blanks.

Tony Randall wasn't shooting blanks into his 70s or 80s, but that isn't fair to the child.

I agree with Donger. Who wants to be 65 and have a 10-year old in the house?

For the woman, after 40 you have a significant increase in risk of Down's syndrome. It's something like 10% chance I believe. If the mother is 40 years old, I'd think long and hard on it, and get some proffessional medical advice.

All joking aside, I think somewhere in the 40-45 range is approaching that age when you are getting to old to have children.

And jsp makes a good point about women over 40.

IIRC, it's broken down like this (very punny):

age 30, a 1-in-1,000 chance
age 35, a 1-in-400 chance
at age 40, a 1-in-100 chance
at 45, a 1-in-30 chance

Agreed. If over 40 but you are wanting another kid, adopt. My parents did that with my little sister. Worked out well because it was a private adoption and we were able to get her at only 3 days old. Funny thing is that her baby pictures vs. our baby pictures, you would swear she was part of the family...

Heck, for a long time, people at church or what not thought that maybe she was my daughter (I was 15 at the time) and they adopted her to save face. My own now mother-in-law thought that as well.

Depends. I'd say at least one parent should be under 45. My responsibilities of getting my child to "adulthood" (i.e. old enough and educated enough to take care of herself) will end in my early 50's. I will really miss having her around, but at the same time, I'm glad I'll have many years to enjoy her as an adult and the freedom that comes with not having children under the roof.
