Pretty sure I read the opposite. They do count against the cap but not as a roster spot.

Q: Does he count on the 53-man roster and does Warfield?

PETERSON: “Neither one of them does but for cap reasons we have to anticipate 55 players and then when they return we have to make some personnel decisions. Their compensation these first four weeks is zero.”

Not sure how to take that but would say that they probably count even though they don't get paid.

I think that's it: their contracts count against the cap but they don't get their game checks...

"Not Likely to Be Earned" bonuses. You can put bonuses that are near impossible to earn in contracts, and when you do that, they are listed as "NLTBE bonuses". These bonuses are added up at the end of the year and added to next year's cap as a "credit".

Very Basic Example: Say the salary cap is 80 million. You have 5 million dollars worth of NLTBE bonuses (something like "Player X gets $1 million if he has 4 interceptions in the last game of the season"). Since you have $5 million in those bonuses, that is added as a 'credit' to next year's cap. So the next year your personal cap number would be $85 million. You could theoretically spend $5 million more than the actual "cap" number and not be punished.

By doing this, no two teams really have the same cap number. The Vikings are usually the best in the league at using these. Last year the "cap" was set at $80 million dollars, but really the Vikings cap was something ridiculous like $94 million. I think they were even further under the cap last year.

And believe it or not, the Chiefs were 2nd in the league in NLTBE bonuses last year. We had a cap number of $85 million. So people complained about Carl not running the payroll up to the cap, but we actually had the ability to spend more money than 30 other teams and did spend more than most of them... no clue how much credit we have (er, had) this year though.
