NFT: Computer Help Needed

My wife and I are expecting our first child. I'd like to pick up the 3.3 megapixel Sony MiniDVD camcorder for making home movies. Our current computer sucks and it's time for a new one. What type of computer should we get? I would like to edit movies, add music and do other stuff. Any suggestions?

I'm definitely not one to answer on the computer question. I just wanted to say congrats on the new bun in the oven!

Although nice, Ailenware tends to call to gamers, and from what you have stated your goals are, I doubt you need a gamer rig. I would suspect your main priority would be a firewire port, and although you can always add one at a later date, it would be easier on you if it came with one. As far as building it yourself, if you are going with a top end machine, you have some wiggle room to improve upon the cost offered by the big guys, but on a low to midrange machine you won't come close to what they offer for the same price.

You might look at dell's dimension E510. It has a single core 3.0 processor. I'd up grade the memory to 1 GB considering you are going to be playing with digital video. I would also upgrade the hard drive to the 250GB Sata unit for the same reason. Of course we want to add the DVD/CD Burner. Notice the DVD is dual layer. The 17" LCD is a nice screen. The 128 MB PCI Express X300 is a nice way to drive it via DVI.

All this has your price point right around $1000.

Dell Dimension E510

If you don't know and love PCs, don't build it yourself. If you just want it to work and you want someone else to worry about how to fix it, don't build it yourself.

Dell and HP both frequently run specials on things that will be right up your alley. You're going to want a decent speed CPU, 1G RAM, and a big ass hard drive. Other than that you'll need to check your camera. Some of the new cameras are USB2.0 instead of firewire, though most of the new PCs have both types of ports. For video I'd recommend you get a 19" monitor.

Enjoy.

From what I've been able to research lately, on the low-end PC's no one can beat the price from the big guys like Dell without cannibalising their current computer, because they buy computer parts in enormous bulk at a discount.

For a mid-range computer where you want to be able to have exactly what you want, its a wash. For the high-end computers, the big guys pad their margins a ton and your better off building it yourself. Since I demand high-performance gaming machines, I save hundreds of dollars by building it myself.

If I wasnt much of a computer person at all, and I just wanted a computer for the internet and simple stuff, there's no way I could beat the big computer maker's prices. I'm not sure how much the firewire port would complicate things, but if all you want is a nice computer that can handle multimedia stuff, and your not a big gaming geek, I dont know if you could build it yourself cheaper, assuming you dont care about the pride some people often get by putting together their own machine.

Ditto what he said.

You want 1GB RAM or more for video editing and a big ass hard drive. Fast IO would be nice so make is a couple of SATA drives set up for RAID if you've got the $$$$.
