Chiefs Team Report
5/7/2006

By Adam Teicher
Kansas City Star

An analytical look at the team heading into summer workouts.

PERSONNEL ANALYSIS: Look for free-agent addition Ron Edwards to become a factor when playing time is awarded at defensive tackle. Edwards played in Buffalo for new Chiefs defensive line coach Tim Krumrie and against new head coach Herm Edwards while he was with the Jets. Both coaches like Edwards and they feel he might be able to provide an upgrade. The 320-pound Edwards is capable of being disruptive against the run and has shown flashes of pass rush ability. If he stays healthy, Edwards will certainly be part of the playing rotation and could nudge Lional Dalton from a starting spot. . . .

The Chiefs need to sort through their six rookie wide receivers to find a possession-type pass catcher. Their top four wide receivers all run well and are capable of making the big play, but none inspires confidence if the ball is heading his way for a tough third-down catch. TE Tony Gonzalez does, but the Chiefs need a receiver like that on the outside, too. The Chiefs will miss departed free agent Chris Horn, who filled that role capably last season and also played well on special teams.

SCOUTING REPORT: Edwards likes his cornerbacks big and physical, so 5-9 Benny Sapp has little chance to ever be a starter. But Sapp could hold on to the nickel back spot he won last season. Sapp's best skill is probably when he comes on the blitz off the slot receiver. Defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham likes to use Sapp in that role because he's effective despite his size. Sapp is not a good matchup against bigger, more physical receivers and can be worn down in the running game.

HONING THEIR GAMES: Larry Johnson won't become a complete player until he becomes a more efficient pass protector. The Chiefs yanked him from games on passing downs late last season because of the problem. Johnson is big enough, physical enough and tough enough to handle a blitzing linebacker or defensive back. It's just a matter of Johnson recognizing where pressure will come from. He's spending extra video time with running backs coach James Saxon and the work will become hands on when the Chiefs begin practice later this month.

DEFENSIVE TACKLES ANALYSIS: GRADE: D-plus. The Chiefs have five bodies in their rotation but all must play better. John Browning is the most consistent of the bunch, but he's a reserve.

Pretty spot on analysis. It's rare to see a media hack that's so well informed about this team.

Sportingnews is one of the better reads for most part.

Edwards and Sims in the middle...is it too much to hope that they can finally get it done?

Maybe this is the year Kris Wilson catches 30 passes and five touchdowns!

Edwards will be steady, if he's healthy. That much I'm sure of, or his former D-Line coach would not have brought him over. Hope is high there, even if he's part of the rotation.

Dalton flashed a couple years ago, but was absent last year. The fact we resigned him, to me, shows how little confidence the staff has in the overall depth.

Browning, if he makes the team, is steady, just not a play-maker, solid reserve, but may be squeezed off the team for the 'potential' guys.

Sims/Siavii - here's where hope may be blind. When oh when, if ever, will these guys play up to the envisioned level of the staff and fans?

"Edwards likes his cornerbacks big and physical"

Aren't Dyson, Barrett and Law all around 5' 10"?? Not too big.

Yeah, except for the missing Chris Horn line. Horn was nothing special. He dropped too many passes.

I agree. But the idea of what Horn was supposed to be for the Chiefs is accurate. We still need that guy.

I agree. Hopefully Crap or the rookie can fill that role. That might be too much to ask of them, but hopefully they can.

I don't lump Sims in with Siavii...at least Sims has shown SOME flashes...
