I don't know about the Insider article, but there was this blurb in yesterday's Washington Times:

Priest Holmes will be 33 years old in October. Injuries kept him out of 17 of 32 games the past two seasons. Larry Johnson more than picked up the slack in his absence during the final two months of 2005.

But Kansas City's career rushing leader isn't ready to walk away in the wake of the helmet-to-helmet collision with San Diego's Shawne Merriman on Oct. 30. Holmes, who has been seeing spinal specialist Robert Watkins, still hasn't been cleared for contact.

"Why wouldn't I?" the three-time Pro Bowl pick said when asked if he wanted to keep playing. "I feel great. Medically, what I've been told is that I need to wait and not make a quick decision based on the feeling [that] I can get out there. I believe at the end of the day, it's my final decision. Will I take what [the doctors] say to heart and really think about it? I will once the time comes."

Holmes, a backup for three of his four seasons in Baltimore before leading the NFL in rushing after signing with Kansas City in 2001, isn't frustrated that his career is in limbo.

"You have to remember how I came up," said Holmes, who made the Ravens in 1997 as a rookie free agent. "I was never just handed the starting position. I had to show first and then was rewarded."

They played a blurb from a Holmes radio interview on NFL Network's Total Access this morning. He gave more of his typical BS answers.

The guy just talks in circles on the subject. It's pretty infuriating.

Priest has said outright that he plans to play if he's cleared. And he's even said that if he's not cleared, it's his decision to make, meaning he might play even if the doctors don't think he should. What more do you want to hear him say?

Did you see the interview on NFL Network? He was being obtuse.

He has all the right in the world to be as open or closed on the subject as he chooses. He's clearly being more closed than the typical star athlete. The problem is, it invites speculation, and there's a lot of that going around right now.

I saw part of what they showed, but I didn't realize it was something new. I thought they were repeating something from a few weeks ago.

But whatever he said, I don't think it's fair to say that Priest gave "more of his typical BS answers" on the subject when he's actually been pretty clear in other interviews. Or at least as clear as he can be without knowing if he'll get the green light from the doctors.

I heard part of his interview today on Sirius. He said he will never, ever utter the words R-E-T-I-R-E. He would not even say the word, he spelled it out. That is somewhat clarifying for me.

That's the interveiw that jsp is talking about, and he did actually say "I won't say the word 'retire'. " before he got.....clever, repeated, but spelled it in the repeat.

Thanks Milkman. I only heard a very little part of it about 5:30 this morning.

I thought it was the exact opposite of clear. "I'll never say the word retire" is not the same as "I don't plan on retiring". In fact, IMO it's about as close to politician speak as you can get.

He doesn't answer questions directly. He always has some odd way of answering without really giving an answer.

Holmes has always been like that. Like I said, it's his right, but it's also frustrating to us fans that are used to getting the answers on superstar athletes.

Based on his situation not cleared by Doctors......
Think of the Doctors situation if they clear him, something happens and they go back after them for mis-diagnosis.....

We want him if he is cleared. I'm the doctor, he has to sign something to waive my responsiblity.....
If all tests look clear.

Priest Holmes effectively retired in December. He's trying to figure out a way to eat his cake and get paid too.
