WTF is up with room service charges in hotels??!!

Can somebody clear this up for me? Have any of you worked in Hotel Room service?

When the wife and I stay in a hotel, we often get room service, it's fun to be lazy and have breakfast in bed. 12 bucks for an omelet, I figure, is worth the convenience.

But just about every place adds 18% gratuity PLUS a $3 service charge.
Then, when they give you the slip to sign, there's an ADDITIONAL place to add gratuity. It even says "gratuity" under that line.

WTF??!!

Didn't they add enough already? THen if I don;t add something while the guy's standing right there I feel like a cheap-ass. Do they really expect you to add MORE?

I stay at the Westin Dallas often for business, and a continental breakfast is $25 bucks by the time you're done.

What do you do?

BONUS RANT: $20 per night parking to park at the HOTEL YOU'RE STAYING AT?
Highway friggin' robbery.

When they add a service charge and gratuity automatically, Bob Dole has no problem not giving the guy standing there an additional tip. It's not like he's going to come back and refill Bob Dole's drink.

And it's definitely BS to pay for parking at the place you're staying.

Yep, I travel all the time and run into it. The only tip I leave after they have already left it for me is "look both ways before you cross the street."

I'm in a hotel now, and just ordered room service about five minutes go. They only charged me 15% and $1. It's not what you know, it's the cheapness of the place you stay.

I was a bit bummed, though, because I was going to order food from a nearby Chinese place and I couldn't get through.

I'll maybe give the guy an extra buck or two if he goes through the trouble of setting everything up ,unwrapping the condom skins off the drinks and butter dish and crap like that.
But I don't give anything extra for bringing in in and setting it at the foot of the bed.

Taco Bell = Entire meal for $4.99
Hotel room service = $13 on up, depending on what you get.
