Basically, you plug your cable TV cord into the cable modem. On the back of the modem is a port just like the one that you plugged into the wall. So, basically...
CATV--->Modem---Ethernet Cord--->Your Computer There's not much to them nowadays. You can pick up a Motorola Surfboard at most Wal-Marts for around $60 or so. |

There's not much involved in splitting a cable signal. The splitters themselves (like this one) are pretty cheap. Even the premium branded ones are no more than $20. You don't have to plug them into electricity or anything - just run the cables to it.
