I built one once as a kid out of some 2x4s, plywood, wagon wheels and some all-thread. Never entered a contest but had lots of fun with it.
Basically, I used the plywood as a deck, 2x4s and all-thread as axles. For steering, the front 2x4 was bolted to the plywood at center and I used a rope tied to each end of the 2x4 (at the wheels) and steered by pulling on one rope or the other kinda like a horse bridle.

I went ahead and did it in paint, not as detailed as if I were to draw out the plans but it should do...
The key to this car is weight placement, since you have to be within a certain weight.. The car is also very aerodynamic for a pinewood car think toboggan or solar power car... You can add one of those spoilers they sell also.. And **** off if you don't like my paint job... |
