KC Star: Gunther to coach Linebackers this year
http://www.kansascity.com/385/story/544375.html
Gunther will take on Chiefs LBs this season By ADAM TEICHER The Kansas City Star Defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham also will coach the Chiefs linebackers this season. “His role on the team will be even stronger,’’ linebacker Derrick Johnson said today as the Chiefs started their off-season conditioning program. “That’s what he wants. He wants to be more involved with the players. Being a coordinator and not being a position coach, he was always saying to (former linebackers coach Don Blackmon), ‘Teach them this and teach them that and I’m going to do my own thing’ Now he’s going to be right in the room teaching it himself. That’s all good.’’ Cunningham coached linebackers for the Chiefs in 1997 and also has done it for the Raiders and Titans. The move is aimed in part at getting more from Johnson. The Chiefs believe he has Pro Bowl potential. “I’m excited about this, real excited about this,’’ Johnson said. “That’s going to be interesting, I would say. Gun coached Keith Bulluck and Derrick Thomas, so he’s coached a lot of Pro Bowl linebackers. It’s going to be a little different, but in a good way.’’ The Chiefs have also been disappointed in middle linebacker Napoleon Harris since signing him last year. They signed Demorrio Williams this month to possibly take Harris’ starting spot. |

One less defensive coach on the sideline. Not to mention, more control in a coach who has not brought all he has offered. Is this a good thing?

I think Gun's best position is at LB coach... I honestly think he is an upgrade over who we had before. Now being both DC and LB coach could be diffrent, but if he was just LB coach I think hes a definate upgrade.

If it somehow improves our defense then that is fine with me. BUT, this could also do something else: put all the decision making and "power" into one coaches hands and we STILL under-achieve or suck and it's easy grounds for firing the guy. No excuses.

With Herm, and Gun on the team the LB coach had ZERO "power" anyway.

I could make this sound pretty tasteless... but I'll just say that Goonther's career has not been the same since Derrick Thomas passed away. Goonther has been exposed as a fraud without DT/Neil Smith/Dale Carter (before drugs)/James Hasty caliber talent on defense.
Goonther has failed as a defensive coach with the Chiefs post-Derrick Thomas, he's failed as a head coach, he's failed as a talent evaluator (see Carlos Hall, see Kendrell Bell). The fact the Chiefs continue to not only employ Goonther, but expand his responsibilities only further highlights this franchise's commitment to mediocrity. |

If I were the secretary to the linebackers coach, I'd be surfing Monster.com.

If it would have said: Gunther demoted to Linebackers coach, i might have been excited.

hopefully this means we have 2 defensive Coordinators too.
head coach/defensive coord - Herman Edwards Offensive everything - Chan Gailey Defensive Coord/linebackers coach - goonther keeps herm out of the offense and gives a 1/2 demotion to Goonther. all of them are closer to their proper coaching level. now if we could just get a real head coach and real GM then we pick actually do something.
