Get a file with an angle guide. I have a little file kit from Stihl that works great. When we got our newest saw, it came with a free electronic sharpener but I prefer the manual file.

Getting them sharpened at $7.50 ea. is a good deal, but when you're out logging limbs, hitting the dirt/mud/pea gravel with the chain, having a hand sharpener is a good idea. Takes about 10-20 mins. Cleaning around the blade, then changing the blade out for a clean and sharp one takes the same amount of time, though. You can always sharpen your own beforehand.

If you have a dremel, they make a pretty nice guide and file for it. It eats through the blades quicker than a hand file, though. My brother uses chainsaws for a living, and he uses a file kit that you basically clamp a jig sort of thing into the bar and it sets the angle for the file. You then file by hand before moving to the next tooth by pulling the chain around. His looks kind of like this:

If you put your victims in the wood chipper you'll save a ton on maintenance and disposal costs.

I second the dremel...although I am too cheap to buy the brand. I've been sharpening them this way for a few years now and it works great. I found some cheaper stones at lowes made by oregon. Just make sure you buy the kit from dremel first so you have the guide. I bought my "dremel" at the target in liberty for $20.

7.50 each i pay 3$ at a place out in willard.
Jig & file for sharpening on sight is a must for a blade to chip properly. I love chainsaws. Got a husq 51cc w/ 18 in bar. Id like to get something in the 65-90cc range thatll run from 20-22in bar. Whats everybody got / want?

I've always paid to have mine done, it's hard enough for me to find the time to get out and cut, I can't do everything myself. I just dropped them off this weekend and it's been a few years so I'm not sure what he's charging these days, IIRC it was around $7/chain last time.
Oh, and I'm rolling with an older Stihl 024 with an 18" bar, it fits my needs just fine and I really don't desire anything else. |

There is nothing like putting a jump cut into a major branch and seeing it fly over power lines.
I also love the feeling of a cherry picker bucket dropping several feet when you pull a log in. Good times. Posted via Mobile Device |
