The Chiefs might think they're a year away

The Chiefs might think they're a year away, but who says the AFC West in not winnable? Every time I talk to someone with the Chiefs -- player, coach, administrator -- I hear something like, "We're not that good yet,'' or "We've got a long way to go.'' I'm not buying it much longer. What the Chiefs are is unknown, but they're playing too well on defense (38 points allowed in three games) with too many productive new players on offense (the electric Dexter McCluster, the surprising Tony Moeaki) to sneak up on anyone anymore.

Take Moeaki. When GM Scott Pioli scouted Iowa's prospects last year, coach Kirk Ferentz told him Moeaki was one of the three most important players the program has had in his 11 years on the job. Pioli looked beyond the tight end's lack of productivity -- 76 catches in parts of five seasons -- to his intangibles: toughness, leadership, selflessness. He leads the Chiefs with 12 catches and two touchdowns after three weeks.

Pioli's draft class is rapidly becoming one of the league's best in 2010. The top six picks all played extensively Sunday in the 31-10 win over the Niners. Eric Berry's a starting safety. The second-round picks, McCluster and nickel back Javier Arenas, combined, are averaging 15.4 yards per punt return. Third-rounder Moeaki starts at tight end while the other third-rounder, Jon Asamoah, is the third tackle or extra tight end, and fifth-rounder Kendrick Lewis is the starting free safety. You don't want to get too cocky about a two-game division lead yet, especially with a team this young. But if the Chiefs don't turn it over, there's no reason they can't win the West.

About time are Draft picks pan out!

I think we go OLB or WR in the first next year.

I have a feeling Cassel will show just enough to make the team give him another year, ala Alex Smith.

Possible. I think we need to see more this year of Matt to know for sure. Unfortunately I think it's entirely possible (even likely) that Matt will stick up the joint and it will become obvious they need to draft one relatively high.

If nothing else, I fully expect some realistic competition at that position next year.

And I guarantee you they draft a QB at some point in the draft. Perhaps a project.

The Chiefs don't think they're a year away.

I guarantee you Haley, Weis and Crennel are having meeting and thinking "how can we shock the world?"

Shoot for the stars and you might hit the moon.

The great thing about being in first place is once you have something to lose, you fight that much harder to defend it. That team hasn't been in this position for years. We ain't seen nothing yet.

Very good post. A little modesty, even if false, goes a long way when you have sucked giant cock for the past few years. The confidence is only building within that locker room. Who knows what will happen the rest of the way, but they have done well with being a huge surprise. Who knows with the way this season is going around the league? If Indy in particular gets some heat put on them, they won't be able to sit everyone and look past the last 2-3 games. I know we have no reason to be expecting to beat them, but hell...I wouldn't be shocked by anything at this point.

The biggest test is going to be when we lose a couple of games and these youngsters are faced with adversity. (the next two games are brutal) If we can bounce back and continue with a solid season after that, then at least in my own mind, I'll know that we are getting close.

The next 2 games will tell us a lot about how this team has really progressed. Now we will face bona fide contenders, back to back, both away games. At least we will have a bye week to prepare for the Colts. Hopefully, we will continue to improve offensively, not relying on special teams or defensive scores. We have a chance, especially in Indy, if we continue to limit turnovers, mistakes, and penalties.
