I'm a huge fan of the WSOP, (although I haven't watched it in a long time). It was interesting to see how people played their hands and how they bet. I got a lot of my game-play from watching the pros. I was also into "Poker After Dark", (it aired on NBC), but it was cancelled last year.
I think a lot of the interest in poker died after the feds killed internet gaming. In fact, the poker league that I was in had a lot of their venues drop out due to lack of participation. There are still games going on in the "back rooms" of some of the bars though. But if they don't know you, good luck getting chips. Those usually die-off in the summer, (due to people going on vacation and such), but they will be firing up again here shortly. I have yet to lose interest in the game, but having time to actually play is another story. |

It has died off because everyone wants to make money off of it instead of playing it for a game for fun. It is still pretty big though and was insane at its biggest.

Because they still can get sponsers and advertisers to support the "sport". Cheap to produce and makes tons of money on that little production cost.

These guys are athletes. They wear athletic hats, sporting shades, and have sponsor logos on their apparel. They sit for hours upon hours in chairs which makes it incredibly difficult to maintain focus while they employ their hand/eye coordination and dexterity peeking at cards and pitching heavy clay pieces skillfully at a target. Additionally, they utilize so much discipline in managing all those facial muscles for that much time that it's exhausting by the time they're finished. Anybody who thinks these guys are not athletes have never driven a stock car 500 miles.

There's no bigger disappointment on tv than not being able to find anything to watch so you think "hey at least they'll have something sports on ESPN" then you turn there and it's ****ing poker. Makes me want to shoot something.

Cheap to produce and has very rich demographics. Not to mention other than baseball there is nothing going on in the sports world.

The E in ESPN stands for entertainment. It's not purely a sports network. Competitions like poker and the spelling bee have been on for years.

It is okay to watch.
I used to play online and had a great time with it. I recently played at the casino in Wichita. Played some 1-3 NL. Great time for a couple of hours. Left $19 up. To me, I would love to be able to afford to play for a living. But, I can't and I'm not sure I could handle the swings that comes with the profession. |
