Strategy question

Team A has a 5 to 13 point lead with less than 2 minutes to go in the game, and the ball within their own 5 yard line. Team B has all three of their timeouts.

Do you, as coach of Team A, force team B to use time outs by keeping the ball out of the endzone on the first three downs while taking as much time off the clock as possible and take the safety on the fourth down to force the free kick and put the game on your defense to preserve the 3+ point lead or do you take whatever yardage is given then punt?

Maybe this is stupid, but let's be real here: I need to fulfill my quota of stupid posts before the year turns over.

The first option is a play not to lose strategy, and I want to kill every single coach that utilizes that strategy.

Agreed.

The defense HAS to cheat way up against the run. The ends are going to converge from the outside.

A perfect time to have a TE release into the flat on a bootleg, with some play action, or spread the field and toss the ball down the field.

On offense, timeouts are nice but not essential. There are multiple ways (spiking, incomplete, out of bounds) to stop the clock. I'd rather take 3 good shots at 10 yards than give the ball back to the other team.

Strategy makes me think of the other situation that bugs me to no end.

Late in the game when you score a touchdown to go up by 7, I HATE when teams take the extra point to go up by 8.

You should go for 2. It's a no-loss strategy. If you get it, it's a 9 point/two possession lead. If you don't, you're still up 7 and if the other team scores they'll kick the extra point.

Conservative coaching sucks.

is the score 5 to 13?

or is that a variable range of the scenario?

huge difference in what you do ... above 7 points you sit on the ball and burn the timeouts.

7 or less and you have to get a 1st down

also depends on what your defense has been doing ... great or teh suck?

It's a range, yes.

And the assumption is you have enough faith in your defense not to let the opposing team move 60+ yard downfield after the free kick.

more than 1 score and you just run the ball 3 times and punt.

hopefully giving yourself enough room to punt

in 2 minute the other team is not scoring twice

typically with a lead like this, you'd want to kill the clock on them, which is why DC's use prevent style defense. the idea is to keep the ball in play and force them to run or take the underneath. but if your defense is the Chiefs, your doomed either way and you lose no matter what the lead is.

It worked for Denver to take a safety in the AFC championship back in the 80's.

If going for 2 is successful less than fifty percent of the time, you're better off kicking the EP. Somebody is going to have to go for two. You want it to be the other guy.

Too late false start Eric Winston. Next snap fumble & recovery by the other team in the endzone. Oh never mind this suggest we had the lead .

Well, if I'm head coach of team A, And let's say my team is winning by 5, I'm definately thinking of running out the clock in that situation and running for that first down marker.

I'm running the ball. In this situation you'd have to. You don't want to risk passing the ball in your own end and have it returned for a pick 6. You also don't want to have your QB drop back in the pocket and put the team at risk of giving up a sack/safety.

If I don't get the first down after running the ball three times, damn straight I'm punting. No way am I giving up a safety. Why? You would make it easier for team B. Force them to score a TD, it much harder to do that in this situation especially with no timeouts left.

In this situation, it really helps to have a great punter. If I know I have a great punter, that most assures me to punt in that situation.
