Life Need prayers or good thoughts or whatever...

I know I'm more of a lurker and don't post a lot but I need some comfort of random strangers I guess. My dad is going through open heart surgery this Tuesday to have a heart valve replaced. I've been told that he is fine otherwise and everyone keeps assuring me it will be ok and that it's routine.

It's freaking open heart surgery, how is that routine, I'm kinda freaking out, I've pretty much played every version of the worst case scenario out in my head. I'm not sure what I hope to get out of this post, maybe people who have gone through or know someone who has gone through this surgery maybe.

Prayers would be appreciated, any feedback anyone has on this surgery would be appreciated as well. I'm just tired of people assuring me that it's going to be ok when they don't know anything.

Statistically, everything will be okay. It's still scary as hell, though. My mother in law had a bout with cancer, and we still freak out every time she goes in for a scan, worrying that it will have come back. It's natural to worry, but they do amazing things with medicine these days.

If its any consolation, my father in law died of a massive heart attack and had zero symptoms despite frequent physicals. His brother had open heart at like 40 and is still kicking. Because they found his issue and were proactive and have monitored him closely, he's done fine.

I don't know, I'd rather have statistics or something. Not just everyone telling me he'll be ok like they are an expert or something. Maybe I'm overreacting but it just seems to be the canned response.

I wouldn't let people's well wishing and attempts to make you feel more relaxed about the situation get on your nerves. It's just a common response. Kind of like saying "sorry for your loss" at a funeral. It's a difficult situation and nobody really has anything profound to say about it, so you get the common response.

I hope your dad pulls through this OK. This is a common procedure and I'm sure he's going to be fine.

Thank you, I think that's what's been happening, everyone doesn't know what to say and I'm sitting here freaking out so I just apply extreme skepticism to everything. I have been assured by several friends that work at the hospital that he has the best surgeon possible but it's still difficult to keep my mind from dwelling on that worst case scenario.

I think Jdiddy just had open heart surgery. He was back posting on the Planet the very next day. It is amazing what they can do now. It's hard to believe that they can cut you wide open and then have you walking around a few hours later--and they will have your dad walking around sooner than you think; it helps the healing process. Its pretty freaky to us because most of us don't go around cutting into people every day, but if it is what you do day in and day out you typically know what you are doing or you aren't in the business very long. Your dad's surgeon has a really good reputation; you get that type of reputation because people get up and walk around this big rock of ours after laying on their table for a while.

I know it is scary, so prayers are sent.
