Business Insider: Texas football players worth $578,000 per year
http://college-football.si.com/2013/...iness-insider/
The debate about whether or not to pay college football players isn’t going away. Every week it seems that another publication joins the discussion. On Tuesday, Business Insider dropped a chart which shows what it calls the Fair Market Value for players. BI determined this value applying the rules in the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement (in which the players receive a minimum of 47% of all revenue) to the top 25 revenue producing schools, and then dividing that figure by 85, the total number of scholarship players on each team. Written out, the equations for Fair Market Value is: ([Football Revenue × 0.47] ÷ 85). The chart is well worth a look. Texas tops it with a Fair Market Value of $578,000 per player. The scholarship of each Longhorns player, on the other hand, is worth only $37,600, according to Business Insider writer Cork Gaines. That makes the Mack Brown situation especially interesting with regards to the Longhorns. The school is bringing in a ton of revenue, so it’s clearly at a higher standard than a lot of other programs. Rounding out the top ten of Fair Market Value (per player, per year): Texas: $578,000 Michigan: $470,000 Alabama: $453,000 Auburn: $428,000 Georgia: $416,000 Florida: $412,000 Notre Dame: $381,000 LSU: $378,000 Penn State: $365,000 Arkansas: $353,000 Obviously this is just one way of looking at the data, and it’s by no means perfect. But it is another data point that can be used to establish a system that ensures scholarship players eventually do receive “fair value” from the schools for which they play. |

And the reasons why they can't do this aren't going away either.

It's a tough call to me. On one hand, yeah you could pay them at bigger schools.
The other side of the coin is they really do get a valuable scholarship, free food that is pretty much limitless and stuff like that. And if you see these facilities like Alabama and Oregon, it's crazy. Lounges with a bunch of TV's, video games, insane hot tubs and killer training staffs and weight rooms. Not all schools can afford all that stuff anyway, so you start paying kids and there will just be a few schools that can compete. It's already bad enough. |

And while football players get scholarship money, they are extremely limited in their ability to get a job. That is just plain nuts. If a player wants to make their own money, they should be allowed to. And none of this shit works if the NCAA crookedly selectively enforces the rules. It makes a mockery of the system when a team like Oregon gets off with a slap on the wrist. When Manziel gets a half game suspension while Dez Bryant gets suspended for a full year. The rules are overreaching and they are enforced so poorly that it gives programs with money a huge competitive advantage. All the while, the NCAA claims to be funnelling this money into scholarships and education, when in fact a huge chunk is put into exorbitant salaries and cuts to bowl committees. |

Yea, and if you paid them, would it be on a tiered pay scale? Blue chippers are obviously worthy of more pay than the 3rd string linebackers or the punter right?

The way I see it, Johnny Manziel should be allowed to do whatever he wants and make as much as he wants but all the others need to stay put as is.

Well lets not pretend they also aren't getting 'paid' in other ways even if some do not use it the way they should....

If you want to pay college players the ONLY way you do it is pay into an annuity that they'll get after they graduate paying them every year. Make it so they earn more if they complete their degree. The vast majority of these players won't play in the pros and if you pay them lump sums they'll just be broke within 2 years like many NFL players.

**** the NCAA. Make a separate high school football draft and let teams set up farm systems.

They just need to set some type of fund up where they receive compensation after their eligibility has been exhausted. Possibly include financial incentives for graduation. A 4-year player would be entitled to more compensation than a one or two year player, obviously, and Im thinking reasonable monthly payments that last up to 5 or so years.

I think all the people pushing to pay college athletes are going to be very disappointed with the outcome if they get their wish.
