Did the Browns screw up somewhere?
"The wide receiver the Browns signed off the Green Bay Packers practice squad Saturday has a torn ACL and will need surgery, a club spokesman confirmed.
The Browns discovered the injury when receiver Charles Johnson arrived and was given a physical, per standard operating procedure. League rules don’t allow the transaction to be voided, however. Any player signed off another team’s practice squad must spend three games on the team’s roster. Last Sunday’s game qualified as the first. That means the Browns will have a 52-player roster until after the Kansas City game on Oct. 27. Johnson was placed on reserve/non-football injury. Johnson, 6-2 and 215 pounds, was a seventh-round draft pick of Green Bay’s from Grand Valley (MI) State. On Monday, coach Rob Chudzinski said the Browns evaluated Johnson prior to the draft and liked him. When they sought a player to fill the roster after quarterback Brian Hoyer was put on injured reserve, the Browns considered Johnson the best option, Chudzinski said. The spokesman said it is the Browns’ intention to keep Johnson and bring him to camp next season." Link: http://espncleveland.com/common/more...&post_id=23881 |

No.
You're not allowed to give a player a physical until after he's been signed off another team's practice squad. So they had no idea he had an ACL tear before they signed him. |

I can see that it is like buying a car as it is but could the scout ask around before the signing?

I wish the article said something about whether or not the Packers had diagnosed the injury and scheduled a surgery.
Seems like a team has to provide medical care to a player known to have an injury and on the practice squad. Don't see why a player would not want the surgery so that he can begin rehab.

Its really a non story at the moment. You still can only dress 46 on sundays. This guy wasn't going to suit up.
But, his measurables, and combine numbers, with his size, and speed. Im shocked he made it to the practice squad. Now he gets his surgery, spends the rest of the year in Cleveland, learning the play book, being with the team, and next year comes in ahead of the curve. I think this was a brilliant move by the Browns.

Oh, and to the OP.
The Browns have messed up several places. Just chuck this in the pit with the rest of the screw ups.

Here is a link to the story on the guy. Easy to see why he would be intriguing for them.
