Missouri Southern coach shot and killed

An assistant football coach from Missouri Southern State University was shot outside of a Joplin, Mo., movie theater Friday night and later died from his injuries.

The school confirmed the death of 37-year-old Derek Moore on Saturday morning.

"We are stunned and deeply saddened by this tragic incident, and our prayers are with Derek's family," said MSSU Interim President Alan Marble in a press release from the school. "We are ensuring that our employees and students have the emotional support they need during this difficult time."

This was supposed to be Missouri Southern's homecoming weekend, but the school announced it would cancel all festivities and postpone its game against Lindenwood.

"The Missouri Southern athletics community is deeply saddened by the events that have occurred," said Athletics Director Jared Bruggeman. "In times like this, our priority is to make sure we are there for our student-athletes, coaches and support staff in whatever way necessary."

Moore was in his first season serving as the team's offensive line coach. He had served as an assistant at Western Illinois for three years before coming to Missouri Southern.

"Derek was new to Missouri Southern, but he was embraced by our campus and community," Missouri Southern head football coach Daryl Daye said in a story in The Joplin Globe. "He was a very likeable person who always had a smile on his face and made friends easily with our staff and players. This is an unspeakable loss for the MSSU athletics family."

Police have arrested a suspect in the case. A 39-year-old male remains in custody at the Joplin City Jail.

Moore is the father of a 7-year-old son.

I guess if you look at women as only pussy you might come to this conclusion.

Killing someone is insane. Period. You don't have to be a misogynistic ass to see that.

That's just silly.

That theater has been there twenty years and that's never happened one time.

I was generalizing for sure. My point being, she was his ex for a reason. Taking it to the level of homicide is unreal. I get your point about killing for any reason being insane though.

Interesting update. Looks like the coach might have stolen the wrong dude's wife.

Police: D-II assistant was shot in confrontation between suspect, wife
By Jerry Hinnen | College Football Writer

Joplin, Mo. police have released further details in the death of Missouri Southern State assistant coach Derek Moore, who was fatally shot Friday night while leaving a Joplin movie theater.

Police have charged Jeffery L. Bruner, 39, of Joplin, with felony murder and armed criminal action, the Associated Press reported. After being taken into custody immediately following the shooting, Bruner is being held without bond in the Jasper County Jail.

According to police, the shooting occurred during a confrontation in the theater parking lot between Bruner, Moore, and Bruner's recently estranged wife, who had accompanied Moore to the theater. Police did not discuss the nature of the relationship between Moore and Bruner's wife.

Police said Bruner shot Moore with a semi-automatic handgun during the confrontation, then continued to fire after Moore had fallen to the ground. Joplin police Lt. Matt Stewart said that Bruner then placed his firearm inside his vehicle and surrendered to bystanders until law enforcement arrived.

An autopsy confirmed that Moore had died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds.

Moore had been hired as the offensive line coach at Missouri Southern State, an NCAA Division II school, last summer. The university held a memorial service for Moore Monday afternoon after postponing Saturday's game and cancelling scheduled homecoming festivities.

"It was too shocking," school spokesperson Cassie Mathes said. "It didn't seem to be the right time to have a homecoming, the morning after."

The school will also observe a moment of silence for Moore at this week's game and is helping set up a fund for Moore's 7-year-old-son, who the AP reports lives in Iowa.

Step dad is in law enforcement in that area. Said that she'd been seeing coach on the side before they had separated.
