Mock (2/17)

Going with the ontheclock.com mock draft simulator.

Assumptions:

1. The Chiefs extend Alex Smith 4 years, $60m ($36m guaranteed), and S Eric Berry 6 years, $38m ($18m guaranteed).

2. The Chiefs restructure OLB Tamba Hali.

4. The Chiefs re-sign OG Geoff Schwartz to a 3 year, $6m deal.

5. The Chiefs place a 6th round tender on Jerrell Powe.

7. The Chiefs re-sign ILB Akeem Jordan to a minimal deal.

8. The Chiefs let walk: WR Kyle Williams, WR Dexter McCluster, OT Brandon Albert, OG Jon Asamoah, DE Tyson Jackson, OLB Frank Zombo, S Kendrick Lewis, S Quentin Demps, S Husain Abdullah

9. The Chiefs sign OT Khalif Barnes (Raiders) to a 1 year, $2m deal, and S Louis Delmas to a 3 year, $9m deal.

On with the show:

1.23.

Available:

12 CB DARQUEZE DENNARD - MICHIGAN STATE
15 OT TAYLOR LEWAN - MICHIGAN

17 OT ZACK MARTIN - NOTRE DAME
19 DT LOUIS NIX III - NOTRE DAME
20 OLB DEE FORD - AUBURN
22 DT TIMMY JERNIGAN - FLORIDA STATE
23 WR MARQISE LEE - USC
26 DE TRENT MURPHY - STANFORD
28 G DAVID YANKEY - STANFORD
29 WR KELVIN BENJAMIN - FLORIDA STATE
30 OLB KYLE VAN NOY - BYU
31 S CALVIN PRYOR - LOUISVILLE
32 DE STEPHON TUITT - NOTRE DAME
36 OLB RYAN SHAZIER - OHIO STATE
37 CB JASON VERRETT - TCU
38 TE AUSTIN SEFERIAN-JENKINS - WASHINGTON
39 S LAMARCUS JOYNER - FLORIDA STATE

Two players I'm passing on because they're not going to be available at 1.23 in the real draft: Dennard and Lewan.

Some really good options here. Marquise Lee is on the board, but his drop percentage peaking around 12% all last season spooks me as well. Louis Nix III is on the board, but I think I can make a greater impact on this team than just shifting Poe to DE. Zack Martin and David Yankey are on the board, but I don't think the Chiefs need OL help. Kelvin Benjamin is on the board, but I really think he's Johnny Baldwin 2.0. I don't really like Calvin Pryor as a single-high safety, and I hate the idea of drafting two safeties in the first round within 5 years. I love Shazier, but DJ's doing fine in his role.

Players that I would take available: Seferian-Jenkins, Ford, Murphy, Tuitt, Verrett, Joyner.

No surprise, it comes down to front seven vs. corners for me. I can't help but love Tuitt -- from the sounds of it, he's come down to his 2012 body size, when he was hell on wheels. He is a 3-4 DE with the athleticism of an OLB, and would make huge strides in increasing a passrush that lagged too often late last season. It was super close between Tuitt and Ford.

Chiefs take DE Stephon Tuitt, Notre Dame.

3.87.

ILB CHRIS BORLAND - WISCONSIN
70 CB E.J. GAINES - MISSOURI
75 DE MARCUS SMITH - LOUISVILLE
76 WR JARED ABBREDERIS - WISCONSIN
79 QB ZACH METTENBERGER - LSU
80 DT EGO FERGUSON - LSU
81 C WESTON RICHBURG - COLORADO STATE
83 WR PAUL RICHARDSON - COLORADO
84 CB JAYLEN WATKINS - FLORIDA
90 DT DAQUAN JONES - PENN STATE
92 RB TERRANCE WEST - TOWSON
94 CB TERRANCE MITCHELL - OREGON
95 TE ARTHUR LYNCH - GEORGIA
96 OT JACK MEWHORT - OHIO STATE
97 RB CHARLES SIMS - WVU
99 QB JIMMY GAROPPOLO - EASTERN ILLINOIS
100 DT ANTHONY JOHNSON - LSU
101 G DAKOTA DOZIER - FURMAN
102 DE DEMARCUS LAWRENCE - BOISE STATE

Only player on deck here that will not be on deck in the actual draft is Terrance Mitchell, so I'm passing on him to keep this draft realistic.

Not great talent at WR here. Abbrederis is a really interesting slot prospect, but the Chiefs need talent on the edges more than anything, and I think Paul Richardson is overrated. I hate Garoppolo and Anthony Johnson, period. Lynch, West and Sims are talented, but neither one are game-changers. I love Dozier, but guard's not a position of need because I re-signed Schwartz. Borland is an excellent linebacker but again, DJ's manning his spot fine.

Who I'd take here: Gaines, Marcus Smith, Mettenberger, Mewhort, Lawrence.

The Chiefs do need corner help, and Gaines played his ass off this past against elite SEC competition. Two really interesting passrushing talents in Marcus Smith and Lawrence to provide the Chiefs options in the future. Mettenberger is one of the few QBs I even like in this draft. And I think the best player on the board right now is Mewhort, but the Chiefs are already three deep there since they brought in Khalif Barnes.

I think Gaines is a really, really good starter who excels in man coverage in the NFL within a year or two. The Chiefs are perhaps parting ways with both Brandon Flowers and Sean Smith in 2015, and Gaines forms a young duo with Marcus Cooper that's bursting with potential.

Chiefs take CB E.J. Gaines, Missouri.

4.119.

109 DT JUSTIN ELLIS - LOUISIANA TECH
113 RB MARION GRICE - ARIZONA STATE
115 C BRYAN STORK - FLORIDA STATE
116 RB BISHOP SANKEY - WASHINGTON
119 WR DEVIN STREET - PITTSBURGH
120 CB KEITH MCGILL - UTAH
122 QB AARON MURRAY - GEORGIA
123 RB JAMES WHITE - WISCONSIN
124 DT CARAUN REID - PRINCETON
125 DE JAMES GAYLE - VIRGINIA TECH
126 CB ROSS COCKRELL - DUKE
128 DE ED STINSON - ALABAMA
129 QB BRETT SMITH - WYOMING
130 OLB JORDAN TRIPP - MONTANA

There's only one player on the board right now that won't be on the board here, and that's Bishop Sankey.

I hate almost all the options here. Let's narrow this down to the players I even like here: I adore Justin Ellis, and I think he can provide this team rock solid support behind Poe. Marion Grice is a versatile RB but this is too early for him. Devin Street is a diamond-in-the-rough, I believe, as a great talent buried under chaos at Pitt. And Ed Stinson, I believe, is Tyson Jackson 2.0.

The biggest impact, I think, is with the boom potential of Devin Street. He will enter into a competition with Junior Hemingway and A.J. Jenkins for #3 WR duties, eventually maybe displacing Avery as the #2.

Chiefs pick WR Devin Street, Pittsburgh.

5.151.

140 QB A.J. MCCARRON - ALABAMA
145 ILB JORDAN ZUMWALT - UCLA
146 QB DAVID FALES - SAN JOSE STATE
148 DE TAYLOR HART - OREGON
149 CB DEION BELUE - ALABAMA
151 RB DEVONTA FREEMAN - FLORIDA STATE
152 WR BRUCE ELLINGTON - SOUTH CAROLINA
153 DT DEANDRE COLEMAN - CALIFORNIA
155 CB SHAQUILLE RICHARDSON - ARIZONA
156 RB DE’ANTHONY THOMAS - OREGON
158 DE BRENT URBAN - VIRGINIA
160 RB JAMES WILDER JR. - FLORIDA STATE
161 CB RASHAAD REYNOLDS - OREGON STATE
162 S HAKEEM SMITH - LOUISVILLE
163 QB LOGAN THOMAS - VIRGINIA TECH
164 RB STORM JOHNSON - UCF
165 DE JOSH MAURO - STANFORD
166 CB BENNETT JACKSON - NOTRE DAME
168 CB CHRIS DAVIS - AUBURN

This would be an extremely difficult decision, given that there are three 3-4 DEs that would be good picks here, in Hart, Urban, and Mauro. But after taking Tuitt in the 1st, that's a nonstarter.

There are four players I really like here: Freeman, Ellington, Wilder Jr, and Hakeem Smith. I'm really high on Freeman, who I think is a midrounder with a serious future in the NFL. Wilder Jr. is a very tall but dynamic RB who'll need some work. Hakeem Smith is a promising safety, but he's more of a SS, than anything. I like Storm Johnson a lot, too, I guess.

The choice comes down to Freeman and Ellington, and I have to go with Ellington. You're talking about somebody who's way too talented, who hasn't even dedicated his life to only football yet, splitting time at basketball where, oh yeah, he lead his team in scoring. Ellington will put more pressure on Avery, Jenkins, and Hemingway.

Chiefs pick WR Bruce Ellington, South Carolina.

6.177.

162 S HAKEEM SMITH - LOUISVILLE
164 RB STORM JOHNSON - UCF
168 CB CHRIS DAVIS - AUBURN
171 DT CALVIN BARNETT - OKLAHOMA STATE
172 S TRE BOSTON - NORTH CAROLINA
173 WR MICHAEL CAMPANARO - WAKE FORREST
174 QB TAJH BOYD - CLEMSON
175 WR JEFF JANIS - SAGINAW VALLEY STATE
180 OLB KASIM EDEBALI - BOSTON COLLEGE
182 CB ANDRE HAL - VANDERBILT
183 TE CROCKETT GILMORE - COLORADO STATE
185 C RUSSELL BODINE - NORTH CAROLINA
187 OT CORNELIUS LUCAS - KANSAS STATE
189 TE JOE DON DUNCAN - DIXIE STATE
190 OLB RON POWELL - FLORIDA
192 WR MATT HAZEL - COASTAL CAROLINA
193 CB WALT AIKENS - LIBERTY
194 DE WILL CLARKE - WVU

Storm Johnson is still on the board, so that's an option. Tre Boston is on board. So is Tajh Boyd if you want a developmental prospect. And I really like Chris Davis a ton. I think the player I want more than anybody else is Kasim Edebali, however, as a sleeper passrushing prospect. But I'm going to gamble and say he's going to be on the board six picks later. For now, I'm going with the player I can get before somebody else does, and that's Chris Davis, who can return kicks as well.

Chiefs pick CB/KR/PR Chris Davis, Auburn.

6.183.

Gamble paid off. Edebali is still on the board.

Cheifs pick OLB Kasim Edebali, Boston College.

very well done. Loved how you gave a list of realistic choices. This is your best work so far. I didn't even care for a couple of the actual picks, but greatly appreciate the format, time and effort put into it.

I don't get the hate of drafting safeties in the first round within five years.

I don't know if you know this but there is no way we can sign Berry for that low. Goldson and Weddel both signed for over 40 mil and those were on 5 year deals. Rolle signed a 5 year deal, 4 years ago, that is worth 37 mil. That number will just keep increasing and unless Berry is willing to give a hometown discount, you're looking at 45-50 mil for 5 years, not 38 for 6 years. Of course, Berry has never been an All-Pro before so we have that going for us. His value to the team is tremendous though, no one else on the roster and very few in the league can do what he does.

I'd do a happy dance if both Gaines and Ellington lasted that long and fell to us, not to mention Davis. I don't think any of the three will last as long as you have projected they will, though.

Looking at everyone who will be available at 23, damn, trading down looks like a great option. Say A team at the top of the 2 wants to get back in front of team x, calls and says "here's our 2nd, plus our third and a fifth". I'd jump on it.

You could still come out with a wr (Beckham, cooks etc) have Easley fall into your lap, and take desir.

Beckham
Easley
Desir

That's a pretty solid three rounds
