PotPlayer

starting looking for a new video player

Windows Player - great video and sound but lacks almost any customization. You still can't even change the aspect ratio

VLC - been my main player for a long time. Great customization and 3rd party plug-ins but it just doesn't seem to handle the new video/audio codec very well. DTS audio often crackles. Video isn't as sharp anymore.

Enter PotPlayer

best of both ... great look and sound of Window player with the full customization of VLC. So many settings it will make your head spin. lol.

no spamware, malware, toolbars etc with download, FREE!!!

2 thumbs up

i didn't say WMP has a great look

I said it had great video/sound quality and it does. But like most windows stuff it's also crappy to deal with for anything other than the basics.

thanks for your contribution though

VLC still plays everything flawlessly for me. And the additional features it has are enough that I wouldn't give it up. No DVD regions, the ability to play .iso files and .rar compilations, ripping DVDs, media file conversions, remote access, and I can have it on every device I have regardless of platform.

Thanks for the recommendation though.

VLC has started stuttering on me after jumping around in different points in a video. Audio is fine, but the video just stutters. The problem started after I upgraded to version 2.1.

I have VLC, but ever since I got on to JRiver, I've seen no reason to go back. It does SOOOO much to make your experience more enjoyable. Doesn't bother you about what format a particular file is, scours the net for metadata. Gorgeous interface. Hovering over files gives you, if you have a TV show episode on the PC, it gives you a screen cap of the ep, a plot synopsis for that ep, the initial air date, the date that ep was recorded, etc. Integrates well with UIs too. Particularly that you can use your mouse scroll wheel dynamically to skip back or forward by 5 secs with a single scroll click, or FF through all commercials with a couple of flings of the finger [once you get used it it, it's amazing how irritating it is that all programs don't do that].

If that actually works correctly that would be enough for me to switch. Does it work on pirated tv shows in .mkv format?

How would I know?

I should add, the biggest reason I ponied up for JRiver, is because it supports Tuner Cards. So it's more than a Media Player, I can record HDTV from my OTA antenna with my HDTV Wonder.

Coincidentally, I recently found my old Magic Eight Ball. Gave it a good shake.

thanks for this - I was having VLC problems with anything in 1080.

Maybe I was doing something wrong, who knows?

But this player works (and looks) perfect.

Thanks again.

You have the K-Lite Codec Pac? It's been a while, but not THAT long, that I installed this on my new PC, and think you still needed the codecs to play everything.

Yeah, it sounds familiar to me - pretty sure I've installed it on a few of my computers (maybe it's missing from this one??)

Can't hurt, might not help VLC. Like I said, I installed the PAC, but can't remember if VLC was the reason or another player.
