Share Your Favorite Coached Moment

At a time, long ago, before we drove Cameros, had goatees, and were fat pieces of garbage (but with 12" pricks).....many of us played sports.

Myself, I was a gymnast (Class 2 & 3 USGF) for nearly 6 years. KS State champion in Vault, KS State 3rd All-Around, Top 3 in Pommel Horse in the 5 state Regionals (TX, KS, MO, OK, AR)....and ran a 4.2 40 (not really). I've had probably 2 coaches that really made an impression on me by their words or philosophy. For me personally, there were no firey speeches. There were just a handful of moments that I remember, which mostly consisted of a few simple words of advice.

What do you recall as your Coaching Moments, either delivered to you via a team speech, or directly?

Mine: After gymnastics I decided to go out for Track and field in the weight divisions, and threw discus and shot put (as a 160lb kid). Somehow, my balance and flexibility allowed me to chuck a 12lb shot 48' and a disc throw of 165'. My first meet as a Sophomore on Varsity, I was nervous and he saw it. I had only been throwing a whopping 3 weeks. He asked what was wrong and I told him I was nervous as shit being a Sophomore amongst mostly Seniors. Older coach, like grandfather age:

He asked : "well....did you come to practice every day"
Me: Yes
Coach: "did you focus on your technique during practice"
Me: Yes
Coach: "are you warmed up and ready"?
Me; Yes
Coach: "well......then there's only one thing left to do. Just Go Like Hell, Son"

..and I popped off a 145' throw on my first toss, good for 4th.

What do you recall as your favorite Coaching Moments, either delivered to you via a team speech, or directly?

I won't call it my favorite but the year after we won state 8 man football. My sophomore year we played the first game against our county rival Jetmore and we lost by a touchdown. The Monday practice afterwards Coach Slaton told the seniors that they were in control of practice. We did wind sprints non stop the entire practice until people were puking then we had to run some more. Coach never called us over until the seniors were dead tired of running. Leg cramps the next day were God awful.

We went on killing the rest of the teams with the 45 point mercy rule and on to our second strait state championship ending that game with the 45 point mercy rule.

A bit different, but the coach who cut me off the little league team. A new team was set up for those who got cut from other teams. All we did was learn fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals. No Coaches sons. No shitty parents. Just learned baseball. So instead of being sent to right field, where the shitty players played, I learned how to be a damned good 2nd baseman. And we won some games. Best year of baseball ever and I accelerated after that.

There was a two page write up of Coach Slaton and the Hanston Elks as the most winning high school 8 man Div II football team in the country at one point in Sports Illustrated. It was pretty cool just like Friday Night Lights playing at home field.
