I thought about this earlier today...

I highly doubt any team out there is going to give Alex very much in FA in terms of making a commitment to him as the starter. More than likely, he will have a hard time getting more than a 2 year deal on the open market, and not for top dollar.

Let's say John Dorsey sits down with Alex and they hammer out a deal that lowers Alex's cap this year and next and keeps him in KC as the backup to finish his career. Maybe the next 3-4 years.

Something like 4 years for 35-40 million dollars with a signing bonus similar to his 17m cap hit for 2017.

The deal would be contingent on Alex understanding that a big part of the contract is helping to groom Mahomes to be the starter and that the majority of the contract he will be played out as a backup.

Honestly, I think this would be a wise move for Alex and Dorsey.

It would create cap space for the team. That's huge with contracts for guys like Jones, Peters, Ford, Hill and others coming up in the next 3 years.
It would provide the team with great stability at the position, regardless of injuries. The team would need to get a backup. What better get backup than Alex Smith? Seriously, he would be the perfect premium backup for a Super Bowl team.

The idea of Tyler Bray as the vet backup kinda scares me. Alex isn't a complete waste. If it's reasonable in regards to the $, I'd have no problem with him staying.

Look what they have paid Foles and Daniel to be the vet backup in the past...

I don't mind him being the back up, but that cap number is outrageous.

His current cap number is over 17m for 2017 and next years is over 20m.

Alex said in an interview a couple weeks ago that he would love to help the team in any way with his contract. Dorsey was asked about it and said he might talk to Alex after the draft about it.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see a deal like this happen.

I had this thought as well. I think the numbers are a bit high for 4 years of a back up but if Alex would take less and agree to be the 2, that would be huge. He immediately becomes the best backup in the league.

He would be the top backup QB in the league easily, and a perfect other part of the QB room. It's completely up to him on if he wants to keep starting somewhere or genuinely help this team. I'd be all for Alex as the backup, not a better person for Mahomes to learn the complete offense from.

Smith gets a lot of shit for not being Brady around here. He's still the 3rd best QB..as far as winning % over the last 3-4 years. Having Manning and "Terrific" Tom in your conference is a ruff roll....not to mention Big Ben. That's 3 HOF QBs in their glory years...

Rodgers and Brees have only been to the SB once in their career....Smith SHOULD have gone had the PR not fumbled the kick.

He's not the greatest ever but he is definitely undervalued..I haven't forgotten the Cassel years.

Chiefs will trade him if Mahomes is ready next season...there is big demand for a QB like Smith...this forum makes it seem as if he is utter trash and he isnt. The situation has to be perfect for him to reach the sb though...he isn't good enough to will his team there on his own.
