IF we are gonna keep the spread

Why not draft Graham Harrell? We should be able to get him in the 3rd or 4th round. That way we get a QB that fits our offense in case Thigpen doesn't progress and we still have our first couple of picks to get a DE and MLB or OL.

A great point, but I don't want to get a QB that is reliant on the spread. If you put all your eggs in one basket and that basket becomes rotten, well then, you're screwed.

If we stick with the spread it kind of backs us into a corner like that anyway. I don't think there are too many QBs that will be effective in both a spread and pro-style offense.

I think Graham Harrell is a way better prospect than Chase Daniel and makes a LOT of sense if he's there in the 3rd round. The guy does not have the physical limitations (height) or wacky throwing motion of other spread QBs and he's got top notch smarts and intangibles. He is not Kliff Kingsbury. I have a feeling the Patriots are going to like him a lot.

Chan finds a better basket for your eggs.

It's what he does.

And call me a n00b but pretty much we're just running variations on the shotgun. That's not all that new...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

My point is, it won't be hard to teach a pro-style QB to run the spread. It will be much harder to teach a spread QB a pro-style offense. Drafting a pure spread offense QB limits your future options.

That's what gets me. All these people talking about the spread like it is something brand new. Isn't the spread just the evolution of the run and shoot? That was pretty successful about 15-20 years ago. Of course, it had a legion of critics back then, too.

When the Rams rolled 5 wide with Warner they called it an "empy backfield."

Nothing controversial.

But when we do it we hear "spread."

Is it greatly different than what the Bills ran at times during the 90's?

No.

The Dolphins under Marino?

Not really. The center is just snapping the ball further back instead of the QB being under center.

It's a ****ing shotgun. It's a 2 minute offense the whole game...

It has a distinct advantage. A lot of colleges are running the spread. Those players are all used to it - linemen, QB's, receivers. If you are a pro team that decides to try it you have an advantage in the draft.

Similar to what used to be the case with teams that ran a 3-4 before it became more popular. Teams like Pitt always had an advantage in drafting pass rush tweeners that didn't fit in a 4-3 scheme.
