Joplin virtually destroyed by tornado
Please post any ways you can donate/give relief to the people in need in Joplin.

As you stated it probably won't end up the same. Most of the people just relocated to another part of the area so no telling how long it takes to refill the vacant lots. |

Yea, there seems to be more residential construction right now west of Main, as opposed to east of Main. There are some larger apartment complexes going to be rebuilt in that area though. The one right next to where Dillon's was located, is leasing and should start construction soon. I think the one at 20th & Connecticut is supposed to rebuild too. Still a lot of empty lots though. I drive through it everyday, and it still is hard to believe. |

There are still around 300 former homeowners that haven't found a permanent place to live. The MHDC projects have started and should be finished in Oct/Nov giving many former renters a place to move into. All the area landlords have 100% occupancy rates and long waiting lists.

At the unity walk event at Cunningham Park, Mark Rohr said that have issued building permits to 67% of the homes that were destroyed and 85% of the businesses.

There were 7,000 home destroyed, so that means around 2300 do not have permits. There has also been a lot of contractor fraud so those with permits might not actually have the ability to rebuild.

The 67% number seemed very high to me. There are still a lot of neighborhoods with just a couple of houses that have rebuilt.
Yes, unfortunately there has been a lot of contractor fraud. Contractors have come in from all over the country. But, a lot of the out of town companies are legit and needed. Really, there's just too much work that needs to be done to rely solely on the local contractors. |

Some real scum buckets rolled in after the storm. I remember talking to an old lady next door to a friends. His house avoided any major damage but tore part of her roof off. She paid $1000 cash to fix the roof. The out of town jerk offs put a tarp (that was donated by tamko) to cover her roof. Nailed it in and left.

Definitely agree. It seems like there are always a few scumbags who will pounce on others' vulnerability to make a quick buck. As far as I'm concerned, people like that add no value to our planet whatsoever.

There's also been a major fiasco with the Joplin high school, from what I understand. The company doing the demo on it offered a specific bid on it, hinging them getting to recycle a lot of the debris. They then discovered the basement was flooded, which was going to up the cost. As a result, they got into a dispute with the school district which took several months to resolve while the site sat locked up with no work occurring. During that time, vandals ripped out most of the valuable shit that the company originally wanted to recycle/scrap. Now they're suing the school district for not securing the assets they'd been promised when they signed the contract for demo.
What a freaking mess.

Little deeper than that. It sat on a flood plane and the only reason it didn't flood prior were the pumps in the basement. That's why it's taken so long to get the new site approved. No fed money if the flood plane was in play, so they had to eminent domain some property. Some of which had already started rebuilding.
