Unsubstantiated Rumor: It will be Bill Cowher as Head Coach in 2009

OK gang, as you all know, A friend of mine from high school is good friends with a former player of the Chiefs and Steelers... just talked with him on Facebook and he said that 100% that Cowher will be the coach next year. The assistants have been told to find other employment and they are at the senior bowl with Pioli and he is seeing which assistants/scouts that may be worth keeping.

Cowher loves the new facilities... working with Scott Pioli... the new attitude... & he wants to be able to come to KC and be the hero.

Apparently, Cowher drafted this former player and they remain good friends. And Cowher told him these things... allegedly.

My friend isn't a big bullshitter... but this would seem to be too good to be true.

cowher and pioli have the makings of a very good organization that players would LOVE to play for...

so, I'd say 80% that this happens... flame away if you like... but, I thought I'd share.

I don't see Cowher having another Super Bowl in him. I'd rather have and up-and-coming no-name HC

In terms of sheer movement skills, Dorsey could conceivably play DE in any style of front. He might be a bit slow for the position, but the man does move like he’s 30 lbs lighter. Watching Dorsey against LSU, I had chills thinking about him playing next too John Henderson and Marcus Stroud on the Jaguars D-line. A pipe dream sure, but that would be the best run-stopping unit in the league immediately. I’ve heard his name get mentioned as a possible 3-4 nose tackle if he goes to Miami, which is a mistake. That is not Dorsey’s game and I don’t think he would be effective in that role. He is far better on the move and getting penetration. His game is disruption, not occupation. He can be a 3-4 end though. He has the ability and drive to be a Richard Seymour type, but his most effective position is at tackle in a cover-2 (4-3) or attacking defense such as the Eagles.

Yet another reason why I would like us to run a hybrid defense like Philly.
I posted something similar in the draft planet that argued in a much more crude and simple manner.

Yes.

Would I be happy with one win in 15 years with a team that I felt was capable of more?

No.

I don't get why everyone wants an "up and coming coordinator" either. As many, if not more, fail than succeed. And to hand a first time head coach this mess and expect him to turn it around ASAP and keep it going long term is a dicey proposition. Sure, you have great examples this year, but you've had examples the last few years of "exciting" hires like Mangini, Payton, McCarthy, etc falling flat on their faces after brief success. And I suspect some of these guys like Sparano, Smith, etc are also going to face rougher seasons in the upcoming year. Then you have guys like Kubiak, Chilly, Zorn, who are hovering around mediocrity, and guys like Marinelli and Linehan who sucked major balls. Sure you have two new coaches in the Superbowl this year, but last year you had two retread coaches.

So really, I don't see the benefit of one over the other. If you bring in a guy who knows how to surround himself with good coaches and work with the personnel department to get his type of players into the program and put them in a position to win, you're golden. It can be a retread or a new guy. The new guy you better be damned sure about. Someone like Cowher, you know he's going to bring in quality assistants. Someone like Jauron, you pretty much instantly know your team is screwed.

To me, if Chin came in, at least I'd know he'd put good coaches on this staff, instill toughness in the team, and have them competing every week year in and year out. And when you get that, and when you manage to get a good QB and talent around him, you have a chance to win Super Bowls...

I completely agree. Get a strong coach who is able to get their teams into the playoffs consistently and pair him with a GM who has an eye for talented players at all phases of the draft and free agency and you've got the makings of a dominant era for Chiefs football.
