Royals Sign Willie Bloomquist By Tim Dierkes [January 9 at 12:20pm CST] According to MLB.com's Dick Kaegel, the Royals signed utility man Willie Bloomquist to a two-year deal for about $3MM. Assuming Bloomquist passes his physical today, he'll compete for the second base job. The 31 year-old hit .279/.377/.285 in 192 plate appearances for the Mariners in '08. |

As long as this doesn't affect Ross Gload's playing time, this is an outstanding signing.

Agree completely. If Gload is hurt, he should sit out. Same with Guillen.

Baseball must suck being in a small market. I got the Yanks so I'm spoiled, but I don't know how any of you guys can get into it when you know the big markets can just spend whatever they want and assemble all star teams. Coming from a Yankees fan it is time for a salary cap.

Not necessarily futile, but definitely an uphill climb. Small market teams can and have won before, they just have to get everything right since they can't buy their way out of a situation.
I would love for baseball to adopt a salary cap, a salary floor and revenue sharing, but the union won't let it happen. There is too much money out there for owners to force a lockout so the only way to get there is with baby steps over a long period of time. |

It makes me laugh how so many people still think the Chiefs are such a better franchise than the Royals. Obviously they don't pay attention to what's going on. The Royals are making real progress while the Chiefs have been getting worse. The Royals have a damn good GM and the owner has been loosening the purse strings over the last few years and getting some quality players. The Chiefs MAY get a good GM... but as it's stood for a while now... no.
Compare the winning percentages of the two teams over the last couple years. The Chiefs aren't the better team. One team actually DIDN'T finish in last place last season... and it wasn't the Chiefs... and the Royals are competing and playing an unbalanced schedule against one the the strongest divisions in baseball. The Chiefs... aren't. Have the Royals been bad for a long time? Yes. But they're getting better. The Chiefs... so far... can't say that. Yea the Chiefs had a nice run of regular seasons in the 90's. Which team won a championship last? The Royals are on their way up. We'll see if the Chiefs can say the same soon. |
