Same old question(again) LCD vs LED
Has technology changed much in the last 3-5 years? I have queried CP before when I bought my last TV.
The way it was, had 3 choices: plasma (best pic, bad in lighted areas, no computer hook-up), LCD (nice pic, fine in lighted area, computer hook-up), LED (great pic, computer input, expensive). I just picked up a Samsung 46" LED 5300 for $500 at walmart, their last one. This is the upgrade in the 5000 series. The 5300 has SMART tech (wireless, apps all that crap). They are suppose to retail at $1000. My bad. I just found Best Buy has about the same pricing as walmart. I had done a brief research and these were one of the top cyber Monday deals. I got home a did a search at Best Buy. The 46" LCD is going for $400-500. The LED's are going about the same. I forgot that there is a 4th choice, the 3D stuff. Those ARE pricey. In the end, I just bought a 46" LED for $500 to go with the 2 other 46" LCD that I bought a few years ago. If the LED is about the same price as LCD, why would anyone buy LCD? BTW, the CP search function sucks. It throws me into a google search outside CP. |

Looks like I was not quite right on that. LED is a similar technology that uses LED lighting for the backlight instead of fluorescent that LCD uses. All things being equal and if you find an LED at the same or close price, go with the LED over LCD.

As I recall, LED is a type of LCD. Just newer/advanced tech. Read a lot about it awhile back. Can't remember specifically what was the difference.
