We should have one of the top Ds within the next two years for a long, long time

Dorsey, Powe, Jackson
Houston, Johnson, Bailey, Hali
Berry, Lewis, Flowers, Carr

That is a ton of young talent.

That isn't even including guys like Studebaker, Arenas, Sheffield, or even Gilberry and Smith.

It is just what I am projecting as the starting lineup by the end of the year.

Are we really going to start someone who weighs 285 at ILB?

He's played it in the past.

Worst case scenario, he takes over Jackson's spot at DE (even though they are completely different positions).

He's heavy, but he's tall and athletic. Not sure how his skill set would translate, but I wouldn't hate it.

Why not?

Levon Kirkland played much of his career at close to 300.

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

I'm interested in Micah Johnson getting that spot though.

LB out of Kentucky that was signed as an UDFA by the Dolphins last year, and signed to the Chiefs practice squad after the Dolphins released him.

Some of us thought he was a sleeper going into last year's draft.

Don't remember that.

Just, to the best of my recollection, ran a poor 40 time.

In the 2011 draft, we filled those holes on D and the other players, still young, have another year under thier belt. It is hard to beleive that DJ will be the "old man" of the group.

This year will be the true trail by fire with the schedule that we have; that is why I think 2 years is the optimal time frame.

In 2010 we also had the advantage of playing one of the easiest schedules I can remember. So I'm not so confident to point at 2010 and say we should be better than that this year simply because we added some guys with potential. One season of improvement isn't enough for me to say there's an indication we're definitely on the rise. We don't know that the holes on D have been filled. Those kids haven't even stepped on the field yet, let alone proven they can fill any holes.

I'm excited about the D potential too. But let's be a little realistic. It's going to be a tough schedule this year. And everyone still seems drunk on draft juice. Making future predictions fresh off the excitement for the draft generally doesn't turn out well...

In 09, they gave up 300 yards rushing to the freaking Browns. There was a dramatic improvement in player progression, tackling, and gap assignment regardless of the schedule. Even leaving out the rooks, the D is still young and ascending. There is much reason to be excited.
