Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation
I didn't see a thread for it, and it opens Friday.
I really enjoyed 4. I thought they did a nice job of retooling things to keep it entertaining with some good laughs and a pretty good plot that had very good set action pieces. Anyway, I just saw this. You'll see in the trailer a part where Cruise is holding onto the side of a plane taking off. You figure it is just a green screen effect done in post production. Nope. I'll hand it to Cruise on this one. It takes balls to hang onto the side of an airplane taking off as it climbs and is going 185+ mph. https://youtu.be/gOW_azQbOjw https://youtu.be/F-qBD17wwrQ http://www.cnn.com/2015/07/25/entert...ise/index.html

I like how each film in this series is its own thing. Each director brought his own thing to the table.
I even liked MI2 because John Woo was the shit back then.

I've always liked these the least of all the spy franchises.
Hunt would get dicked by Bourne and Bond. |

If Bourne doesnt have quick cut photography, he might not be fast enough to even realize Hunt, in full disguise, has got the drop on him because Jason was distracted by Hunt's rediculously attractive member of his team. By now, Ethan is using a high voltage tazer made to look like a phone, and the phone's stylus which is a makeshift stiletto, has already been plunged into Jason's neck. Once removed his jugular will bleed out under such pressure it'll look like a Roman fountain of red.

Never! Bourne is too on-edge and aware. Neither Hunt nor Bond would get the drop on him. Bond would be the one to be distracted by a baddie. He got poisoned by Le Chiffre's slut in Casino Royale. I couldn't believe that. Such a rookie mistake. Hunt definitely does have the best tech though, followed by Bond, with Bourne bringing up the rear, although he's the most resourceful. Hand to hand combat is no contest. Bourne is taking that one handily. |

I was just having this conversation with some friends of mine a few weeks ago.
If you go back to the mid-90s when the MI series came out, a good argument can be made that MI has been the best of the genre between Bond, Bourne and MI. Obviously Skyfall is the best of the lot, but holy shit were those later Brosnan movies terrible. The World Is Not Enough could have killed the franchise and Die Another Day was almost as bad (thankfully Rosamund Pike was around to save that one). Niether Bourne nor MI has had nearly as bad a flop as those 3 Brosnan pieces o' crap. If MI5 is as good as the last one, I think you can put the MI franchise ahead of Bond and Bourne as the best 'spy' franchise of the last 20 years. Bourne's lost too much steam and the Renner version was okay, but not good enough (similar to MI2 really). Mission Impossible is just a really underrated franchise.

Idiots. A happy byproduct of this though probably was no rush to get another made by x release date, so some shitty script wasn't forced for them to make do with it. Like I said, the last one blew me away by comparison to my expectations were for what it would be. Is it Kubrick? No, but it's a well done international spy action movie movie that hits on all cylinders and really have some glaring weakness from 1st to last frame. If we are going to discuss spy characters, I am still waiting for someone to script a treatment and direct a film in the vein of North by Northwest. Not a remake. An homage to its distinct feel that is all its own within the realm of the genre.

My respect level for Tom Cruise goes up every time I remember he's doing his own stunts on these.

Brosnan is a strange one. He embodies everything I think James Bond should be. He's got the look, he's suave, debonair..
But **** me, his movies are real pieces of shit. |

Because he should have been Bond back in the 80's when he was 1st considered. His 1st wife died some time around then. Thus, we got Timothy Dalton.

They had an option on Remington Steele. Brosnan had been chosen as the new Bond and was scheduled to be announced. The rumors had already picked up speed and because he was now 'Bond', Brosnan's name suddenly became hot. Remington Steele had been cancelled but the option hadn't expired yet and when Brosnan became a name about town, NBC picked up the Option and killed his ability to get out of the deal. Eon moved on when they didn't want to wait for the option period to expire. My recollection is that they didn't even end up bringing back the series (or maybe it was a movie deal). In either event, Brosnan got absolutely !@#$ed by the whole deal.
