shattered my wifes car rear window

any advice from CP here?

just finished mowing the yard. as i turned off the PTO on the rider, apparently i came across a small rock, of course it hit the back glass. kaboom! end result, cabletech loses.

of course i have insurance. that's who i'll be calling first thing in the morning. anybody else have experience in having the glass replaced? it's a 2003 ford escape. or should i just take it to the dude down the street that repairs auto glass. or maybe that safe lite repair company i hear on the teevee.

damn, i feel like and idiot.

oh yeah, and IN before the anti-freeze.

Pay for it yourself

Your rate will go up plus it won't be much more than your deductible I would imagine.

That.

Don't call insurance. Pay out of pocket.

Insurance doesn't go up for claims of this type, at least not if he's carrying comprehensive. Accidents where you are at fault and moving violations raise rates. OTOH, if he doesn't have comprehensive I don't think they'll even cover this type of damage at all as it's not a collision. Unless he comes out and tells the adjuster that he ran over the rock that caused the shatter, they have no recourse but to list it as a no-fault comprehensive claim.

I got a chip/crack in my car's windshield from a semi kicking up rocks about 100 yards ahead of me. My windshield is particularly expensive [>2x$ of a regular windshield] because I have heads-up display that requires a special grind to the windshield interior for the data to show up. Adjuster bitched and bitched about the price, but I just said 'that's why I bought comprehensive coverage.' Repair company came to my place of work and replaced it in the parking lot without me having to get involved at all. Rates didn't go up either.

To piggyback off of this, broken windshields are generally looked at as 'no-fault' situations, and rates usually aren't raised. In some states, there's not even a deductible for glass replacement if you've got comprehensive.

I kicked the deck on my rider mower once to clear the grass clumps, and my neighbors rear Tahoe window explodes from across the street. Never found rocks or anything, but he heard it from inside his house. Ins. covered it. (and I think he is his own agent...AAA)

I look around now before I do that.

Yup. I've gone through three windshields, and they're usually priced OK and super fast to get the job done.
