The one guy that could turn this team around
....Richard Smith
It's not that I think this guy has super skills or that he has done anything up to this point to make me think he will be a stud. BUT.. His emergance as a guy that could be a solid outside reciever would do wonders for this team. 1. Most obviously, it would provide KC with a young, fast wideout--something Boerigter was suppose to be this year (HUGE, HUGE loss IMHO) This offense for all its past success the last two years was missing this element and still succeedung. 2. It would move Dante into the third WR role. He could focus on returns and lineup more in the slot were he is most effective. Running him across the middle or on routes that require Trent to drop the ball over the CB is moronic. He is 5'7"!!! As special a player he is, those two duties of a starting WR he just cannot do well. 3. Force the other team's best CB (ala Champ) to respect him rather than Gonzalez. 4. Help the offense convert on third downs. For all its success last year, this offense seemed to either go down the field and score OR go 3 and out. Consistent movement of the football, changing field position, and keeping the defense off the field are equally important, which brings me to my last point.. 5. The defense on Sunday was giving up less than 3 ypc halfway through the third quarter and Delhomme passed for a grand total of 180 yards on some pretty lucky throws IMHO. This defense is what it is--a poor tackling team. But a poor tackling team that is tired has no chance at stopping anyone. You can't scheme your way out of that. It ran out of gas and the offense didn't respond when it needed to. Is it unfair to put so much blame on the offense? HELL NO!! That is the unit on which the majority of the money is being spent and they way this coaching staff has decided to win games. I'm not saying that KC can't win games without a young guy stepping up (I sure hope that isn't the only way), but if he could, I really believe it would do wonders for the whole squad. |

Smith had a chance to step up Sunday, but decided he'd rather throw up all over himself.
Green said about Smith, "he has a ways to go", and even that was sugar coating it. I doubt the guy even makes the team next year. |

Really, Horn may be that guy instead of Smith. He's been around this team for a couple years and actually saw some action in NFL Europe so the game may not be as big for him as it would for Smith.

I agree. We saw what Smith can do. Horn deserves his shot. He may not do any better Smith, but I doubt he'll do any worse. Parker was drafted to be the deep threat on this team. It's too bad he can't get healthy. |

They waited until the 4th quarter down by 11..... Seems to me like you would want to instill some confidence before you count on him on the clutch I know at least of 2 times he was as open as if Mcleon was covering and Green opted to throw it to either a double or triple covered Morton. |

You're prolly right about waiting too long to give Smith some opportunities earlier in the game. Especially considering how pass-happy KC was to start the game. But I read where Smith also goofed on some routes. One ended bringing more defenders into area where a screen to Gonzo was designed to go. Most fans prolly don't even notice when things like that happen. I know I sure don't. But you know darn well the other players, and certainly the coaching staff does. If a QB isn't confident a WR is where he's supposed to be, he won't throw him the ball. |

1. Richard Smith did not see any balls thrown his way until it was fairly obvious were not running the ball so Carolina had something like 8 DB's on the field.
![]() 2. Of the two balls I saw thrown to Smith one would have been an very good catch considering that he got pummeled by the DB at almost exactly the same moment that the ball got to him, and the other would have been a circus catch. So I would not say he “Puked all over himself” by dropping those two.......I don't think there are many receivers in the NFL who would have caught those two passes. 3. Dante Hall should be on the field as much as possible. I do not agree with "saving" him for returns. 4. This Team cannot win by playing Martyball we just do not have the Horses on defense for that. 4th & short inside the 40 = go for it! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

And here I was thinking we needed a Marvin Harrison or Ray Lewis type...
