Jared Allen, one bright spot in the Chiefs Defense
Now, Im not sure the exact number of starts Jared Allen had, but Im pretty sure he missed at least the first month of the season playing behind the ineffective Vonnie Holliday, before taking over the starting role.
However, Jared Allen's performance has been outstanding, and I think he was a great find for the Chiefs defense. Jared Allen finished the regular season with 9 sacks, far and away the team leader in sacks. The next closest number is 4.5. Here are some numbers of other pass rushers around the league, and how they fared, compared to our sleeper pick in the draft. I think he was picked in the 6th round, but Im not entirely sure. Jevon Kearse finished his season with 7.5 sacks NFL sack record holder Michael Strahan finished with 4 sacks. Vikings 1st round pick Kenechi Udeze finished with 5 sacks Jets sack specialist John Abraham finished with 9.5 sacks, only half a sack ahead of Jared Allen. Granted, Abraham missed 4 games with a knee sprain, but Allen didnt start the entire season either, missing around 4 games also. So for the same amount of games, Allen is right up there with one of the better pass rushers in the league. Jason Taylor finished with 9.5 sacks If Allen had gotten to start the entire season, who knows where his numbers would be. 12 sacks is good enough for number 5 on the NFL Sack leader list this season, held by Simeon Rice. I think in the 4 games he didnt start, he could have had a shot at being up there in the top 5. We all know one season doesnt make a career, but at least Jared Allen does show some promise, and looks to be a big contributor to the Chiefs defense next season. He is one of a very select few who actually deserves to keep his job this offseason. He has played outstanding for a rookie that was drafted very late, and played for a smaller school. He can only get better. |

And he will garner zero interest in Rookie of the Year voting, because he's on the 31st ranked defense in the league.

Thats how it is in the NFL though. If your team isnt winning, youre immediately disqualified from winning any type of awards.
Thats why several players with outstanding seasons get passed over in the Pro Bowl voting each year, when they play for losing teams. I think Jared Allen is going to be a really good player for our team though. I mean, look at him, and then look at Ryan Sims. If you looked at their numbers alone, you would think that Sims was the 6th rounder, and Allen was the first round pick. If we had an actual dominant defensive tackle who could command a double team more than once or twice a game, who knows what havoc Allen would be wreaking on opposing offenses. He's pretty much done this stuff this season all by himself. He hasnt gotten much help on the D-line, other than Lional Dalton.

I watched Jared Allen a lot yesterday. That guy is pretty fast and should have had the fugging midget Flutie yesterday. I think he needs to learn some technique. The guy is a fugging bull coming off the corner. He was held several times and it was never called.
A little more strength and technique and this guy is gonna get sacks in bunches. |
