Performance Bonus?

Being the relative football noob that I am, I was wondering if the Chiefs (or any other teams, for that matter), give their players bonuses based on performance? Do they get extra $$$ for breaking records, getting into the playoffs, Super Bowl, et al.

If not, why not?

Yes, the do. Or at least that's what I can remember them talking about over the years. Bonus for yardage, being on the roster, etc.

Some of them do, some of them don't.

It's either in their contract or it isn't.

Ah, so it's an individual thing, and not a team thing?

That seems odd to me.

Ricky Williams got douched pretty severely by Master P on his first NFL deal.

In my estimation, that's his own fault.

Yes. The XFL had an interesting idea that I think might be worth adopting. IIRC, the winners of each game got a bonus and there were even bigger bonuses for winning in the playoffs.

That's what I was getting at. A game bonus, then progressively higher bonuses based on playoff wins, then the biggie.

i believe the players for all teams get paid more for playoff games and the superbowl.

but the team gives individual players bonuses for all sorts of things (games played, offseason workouts attended, receptions etc)

seems like incentives are become more and more part of contracts these days.

All players make the same amount of money for each playoff game regardless of their individual contract. I believe it was around $16,000 per game last year.

IIRC, the winner and loser of each game get different amounts, and the amount increases the further you go into the playoffs. So if a team made it all the way inot the Super Bowl, and won, they'd have winning shares from at least 3 games, which can add up to a healthy amount for the minimum wage scrubs on the back end of the roster, but won't even be noticed by the star players.

Link to collective bargaining agreement

It appears that the pay per game increases as you go through the playoffs. However, the winning and losing teams are paid the same until the SB with the players on the winning team in '04 each recieving $68K and the losing players were paid $36.5K. There is no pay scale listed for the '05 playoffs. I guess the CBA expires at the end of the regular season not at the end of the playoffs.

Pro bowl pay was $35K for the winners and $17.5K for the losers each of the last two years.
