If I were a General Manager of an NFL Team......
There would be 3 things I would want, and I would feel like I could win a Super Bowl. (Well, not me personally win a Super Bowl, but hopefully you get my drift)
#1 Great offensive line #2 Great defensive line #3 Smart QB It is funny that teams overpay for guys like Terrell Owens, Randy Moss, and 98% of all overhyped running backs. It is no coincidence that certain teams get this. As much as it pains me to say it, but do you really think that Rueben Droughns and Mike Anderson are exceptional athletes in comparision to other running backs in the NFL? But both had exceptional seasons in Denver because of a scheme and an understanding that all you need is a good O-Line. Running backs at the NFL level are all exceptional athletes, and while there are your occasional freak athletes like Barry Sanders, LaDainian and possibly Reggie Bush, they are all capable of hitting holes that an O-Line can create. Defensive line......if you can create pressure on the QB from the ends and contain the run at the point of attack, you will succeed on defense. You dont NEED exceptional athletes at the corner position......if you can get constant pressure on the QB, MANY NFL caliber corners can contain a WR for the few seconds that you give a QB to survey the field. It all starts on the line. I do need a smart QB though.....doesnt need to have exceptional skills, but needs to not make mistakes and take care of the ball. My exceptional O-Line will open running lanes and protect my QB, so no team can load the box or concentrate on my passing game exclusively. Isnt all of this common sense??? Why dont teams understand this??? Is it that some teams have just made past mistakes paying over overhyped skill players that they just cant pay for a nice O-Lineman?? I just dont get it........ The Chiefs are now paying the price for not reloading the on the O-Line and now they are all old.......and the ones we have drafted stink. OK, I am done. Blast away. |

Carl <> Good draft, why we are always behind the 8Ball
never really improving as a team.

I think your analysis is very good - although I would say "front 7" rather than DL.
I would also add superior "head coach" to your list. New England is the model. |

Overhyped skill players sometimes help in bilking fans out of their money, so it's not always about what works on the field.

Yea, if I were holding a powerball ticket, the only thing I would want is the winning numbers for the next drawing.
![]() It's not like there a bunch of really good linemen jobless because teams are signing Terrell Owens. There is a limited number of quality players at each position, and it's tough to get even a couple of great players on the same line, let alone the entire unit. Wanting quality linemen is hardly an original concept. But much like getting a good QB, it's harder to do than say.

And if it is such an obvious idea, then why does Dallas go out and pay loads of money for Terrell Owens, and at the same time their own O-Line is getting old and is killing Drew Bledsoe? Seems obvious, but not sure a lot of teams get it, and KC falls in the category of not getting it..... |

Dallas bought TO because Jerry Jones wanted to sell tickets. Even if you know that the key to winning is getting a solid DLine, that doesn't make it an easy thing to do. If we had spent our free agency money buying Corey Simon and Hugh Douglas, we wouldn't be any better off.

I'm not so sure about that. Carl and Lamar want to sell tickets. Jones wants to win another SB. I remember an interview with Jones back in preseason when TO was injured so much, he said that he was willing to wait on TO to get healthy because he thought TO would help the team win. He also said, concerning Drew and the backup QB that Drew gave them the best shot of going all the way this year, so they were sticking with Drew. That's what frustrates me about KC. Other teams want to win. We've had a great season when we sell out all the home games. Let's keep the team good enough to sell tickets.

Oddly, none of my top 3 are players.
1) A great HC - let him pick his assistants (since he's great, they will be too) and the coaching staff would be able to get the most out of any players that are given them 2) A great Player Scouting Department - a group that when they tell me to draft someone, I know they will develop into a Pro Bowl player. Imagine what a team would be like that drafted 5-7 quality players every year instead of maybe 1-3. 3) A cap guru to assist in juggling salaries to keep quality players around and keep $ freed up to sign FAs as well.

KC made an offer to the best DT on the market, and he chose to stay in Seattle. There was one great guard available, he went to Minnesota. Dallas signed pro-bowler Mark Wahle a few years ago. Seriously, if it's so easy, list the guys we or anyone else should have signed. It's not a matter of teams not wanting to, it's a matter of there only being a limited number of guys available. And once you lose out on the guy you wanted, you have to look elsewhere. Since we couldn't get Rocky Bernard signed, we were supposed to pass on Ty Law two months later? Why? The notion that teams just choose to ignore it is simplistic at best.

While saying you need lineman is great and all but like was said earlier alot easier said than done. Can't miss lineman go top 10...Teams also pay big money to WR's and draft them early because a top flight WR opens up the rest of your offense. |
