Is Allen worth it?

Jared Allen’s place in NFL (financial) history
April 23rd, 2008 – 7:57 AM by Kevin Seifert

Based on some very preliminary research this morning, it appears that new Vikings DE Jared Allen is the NFL’s third-highest paid active player and the fourth-highest in league history.

If you use guaranteed money as a benchmark, then there are only two players whose contracts guarantee more than the $31,000,0069 in Allen’s deal. Both of them are quarterbacks: Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger, whose recent contract extension guarantees him $36 million, and Indianapolis’ Peyton Manning, who was guaranteed $34.5 million in 2004.

The NFL record, we believe, is the $37 million the Atlanta Falcons guaranteed QB Michael Vick in 2005.

http://ww3.startribune.com/vikingsblog/

He is now the highest paid defensive player in NFL history, according to them.

There's no way he's worth that amount. He's a great player and I'm sad to see the Chiefs loose him, but I would be pissed if my team paid him that kind of money.

The guy had a great year but disappeared in the clutch.

And I've said this before...one knee injury and his effectiveness could be drastically reduced. He's not the most naturally talented guy. Considering the balls-out style of play he brings, and those long legs, it's a possibility.

True, but he’s not in the division with the knee diving Donks anymore.

That's not what I'm saying. Some guys recover better from injury than others. I'm not so sure Allen would be one of those guys. Take Eric Hicks as an example. There's another long guy that racked up 14 sacks, then busted a knee and really was never the same.

You should feel good about this trade. There is no way the Chiefs would have paid him that money, nor should they, and he would have eventually walked and we wouldn't have gotten anything for him. We got a first and 2 thirds for a guy who didn't want to be here. Not bad.

Good for him. I'm glad he's getting that kind of cash from a different team though.

We're not ready to contend yet and he wanted out. That's probably Carl's fault but you can't fix stupid. That being said the Chiefs are taking a completely different tact and I'm more excited about this weekend's draft than I can ever remember.

We've never had the opportunity to draft this many kickers in one weekend ever.

They need to draft this guy because he can hit from anywhere on the field. Because that's the only way the Chiefs will be able to score any points.

Only if he's the last piece of a SB puzzle, but MInny doesn't even have a QB.
