The Canyonlands are great .... Anasazi ruins, great rock formations, canyon mazes, hidden springs, 4wd country everywhere ....

A trip to that part of Utah is like a trip to the moon. The rock formations do not look like they should be of this world. Camping there and sleeping under the stars was one of the best trips I've ever taken.

Zion is a great NP. There is a really great hike there that puts you on top of the big walls. One of the coolest experiences of my life was making camp, drinking some special tea, and hiking out to watch the sunset from the top of one of the walls. A small airplane flew through the valley below us. Mindblowing.

I'm not sure there's a prettier drive in America than the drive from Denver to the Grand Canyon. You get the mountains in Colorado, then the rock formations near Moab, and then you go through Monument Valley on the reservation, and then end up at the Grand Canyon, which is, well, the Grand Canyon. I love that drive.

We did that drive and met Trisha's parents out there. We hiked to the bottom of the canyon and stayed the night at Phantom Ranch before getting up and hiking out the next day. I wish we'd stayed multiple nights at the bottom, but it was the trip of a lifetime. It's hard to believe that Jim would have the heart attack a little over a year later, considering he did this trip.

2nd pic: Trisha overlooking the bridge on the home stretch
3rd pic: Me checking the map and resting
4th pic: Jim and I soaking in the creek after a long day (don't open unless you want to see pasty white skin)

Moab is awesome, but I can't help getting a little depressed when I've been back more recently. When I first went, there was one hotel and a local diner. That was about it. It's changed quite a bit. Throughout college, my crew and I would make 1-2 trips a year to either Moab or Zion.
