Guru/ Hacker People...come hither
Does anyone know how to find the location of a private IP address?

Like, you want to know your next-door neighbor's IP? If it's a situation like that, your best bet is to break into their house and see. Otherwise, there would have to be a connection between their computer and your computer (or a server you control) to find it, and even then it's not an easy task.
If you just want to know the physical location belonging to an IP you already know, you can get some info from sites like this: http://www.ip-adress.com/ip_tracer/ Even then, there's no guarantee of accuracy. Tracing my current IP yields that I'm in NYC right now. (I'm not. Our ISP is out of NYC.) |

In most cases you can only trace an IP address to the service provider which MAY narrow it down to a fairly small area (city, town etc) but unless you have someone on the inside it's not easy to trace it from the service provider to the enduser and the ISP may be across the country.
As mentioned, a simple WHOIS will do the above for you. If you don't have someone on the inside try calling up technical support of the service provider until you get one of the slackers in IT. Tell them your IP and try to parlay that into the customer information. This is assuming you have then end user IP. There's several ways to go about it, none are easy unless you have someone with the information that you need willing to share it with you. |

First thing that comes to my mind when you mention 'private IP address' is RFC 1918
http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1918.html Specifically reserved IP addresses. You wont be able to find those IP addresses without physicall sitting on the same LAN. Now if its a public IP address, thats a whole new ball game. Quite easy to do. |

If you have any kind of domain (even through your service provider) created a really obscure URL like www.dmacchiefsplanetallkindsofwierdshit.org and send him the link to that URL with "naked pictures of my wife" as the header. Keep a log of IPs that hit that URL (there should only be one) and there you go, you have his true IP. Bad news is your back at original dilemma of trying to extract the guy who pays the bills for that IP out of the ISP. A little networking knowledge and some social engineering it shouldn't' be to hard to pull off when talking to a tech at some soulless, impersonal ISP. I should be a spook. |
