AFCWest - Back to being dominant

So, we've all sat around for much of the last decade watching the teams of the AFCW disappoint us from a "consistently being competitive" point of view. Sure, we all like to see the other teams suck... but, really I enjoy it when each team is very competitive and the games are great.

Is 2010 the year that we'll finally see the four teams battling at .500 or greater, rather than 1 and maybe 2 teams only topping the .500 mark?

Right now, I'd have to say we're looking at another 2009 ... with the teams being slightly improved, but really only SD is a legit potential for 10 or more wins. The other three would love to be at .500 or 9 wins and even then, I'm not sure .500 or 9 wins means they're contending to win a playoff game.

How much longer do we have to wait for the AFCW as a whole to become dominant?

Im thinking the last place team (whomever it will be) is going to have 6 or 7 wins. Not great but an improvement over years past.

I'm thinking both Chiefs and Broncos are going to mediocre (but improved) and next year the new coaching staff, players, managers etc will begin to gel. Who knows with the Raiders as long as Al has something to say in team decisions. Poor guy is senile, stuck in 1980 and he doesn't know it.

Expecting about 7-9 or 8-8 for the Chiefs this year.

honestly, I dont think Al Davis has as much say as he has had in the past over the last couple years.

Big Al backing off is the talk o' the town... you guyz just don't hear much about it cuz you're not RaiderFanz. Here's some snippets from a CBS Sports blog on the subject:

Al Davis finally wised up and ceded power.

SAN FRANCISCO — Evidence suggests Davis is no longer working alone in making personnel decisions for the Raiders.

Davis would never admit that, of course, but the drafting and trading decisions this offseason don’t seem like the work of the same man who drafted Darrius Heyward-Bey last year, traded for cornerback DeAngelo Hall or signed wide receiver Javon Walker as a free agent.

This, in fact, sounds much more like Davis’ method of operation in the ’60s, when he built the team into one of pro football’s powerhouses for the next two decades. But he didn’t act as a one-man band. Coach John Rauch and general manager Scotty Stirling wanted quarterback Daryle Lamonica, so Davis made a trade with Buffalo. Ron Wolf talked him into drafting Ken Stabler.

This year has looked like a blast from the past. The Raiders draft has been universally praised. Their first pick, linebacker Rolando McClain, is a stud. Many mock drafts had predicted the Raiders would take Bruce Campbell, a Maryland offensive tackle who was the workout king at the NFL combine, but not very productive on the field, in the first round. Instead, Davis waited until the fourth round, and one publication called that the steal of the draft.

He traded for Washington Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell, yielding only a fourth-round pick, and immediately extended his contract. Campbell is a proven NFL quarterback who can throw the deep pass that Davis loves.

Finally, he cut JaMarcus Russell. That was expected before the Raiders’ minicamp, but I believe Davis waited to see if Russell would renegotiate his contract, because $6.45 million is far too much to pay a quarterback who would be sitting. Russell refused, though any NFL team that signs him now will pay him little more than the veterans’ minimum salary.

Davis listened to his scouting staff. They’ve done good work in previous drafts on the lower rounds. This time, he listened to them on everything.

If Davis is listening to others, it’s good news. The Raiders’ only good period in Oakland came when Jon Gruden fought Davis to get rid of unproductive players and bring in Rich Gannon, the heart and soul of the Raiders’ last Super Bowl team.

Davis will be 81 in July. It seems that he’s finally realized he has to return to a winning formula. Good for him.

If we hit 8 an 8 that would be huge.

I thought the Turds had a remarkably good draft especially considering their 2009 class.
I’ll say the 3 also-rans will have 5 to 7 wins, (each as opposed to in total). The 4 NFC West games should help our overall division's record.
