2011 Mock Draft - End of Regular Season (almost) Version
Chiefs Mock:
1. Von Miller, DE/OLB; Texas A&M: 6’2”, 240 lb. - The Chiefs defense was drastically improved in 2010, but still lacked a respectable pass rush outside of Tamba Hali. Hali was moved to either OLB position during the year, and was most effective playing over/outside right offensive tackles. Miller would give the Chiefs a potent pass rush that could take this defense to the next level. 2. Jerrell Powe, NT; Ole Miss: 6’2”, 330 lb. - Powe is a massive gap plugger that would give the Chiefs a true 3-4 nose tackle. Not flashy or spectactular, Powe is however very consistent and knows his role. Same school as previous Chiefs picks Dexter McCluster and Kendrick Lewis, Powe was co-captain of the Rebels in 2010. Fits a lot of what the Chiefs look for in a player and gives them the true nose tackle that they lack. 3. Austin Pettis, WR; Boise State: 6’3”, 205 lb. - Pettis has quality NFL possession receiver written all over him. Long and lanky, a nose for the end zone and hands of glue. He runs excellent routes and can make the circus catch. Not fast, but knows how to get open and catch the ball if it’s anywhere near him. Had 147 yards and a touchdown going against potential first round cornerback Brandon Burton in the 2010 Las Vegas Bowl. Chiefs have nothing of quality at the WR postion past Bowe and Pettis would be a welcome and needed addition. 4. Marcus Gilbert, OT; Florida: 6’5”, 325 lb. - Gilbert is a massive offensive tackle that has excellent run blocking skills. A true road grader with experience at the right tackle position. 5. Ricky Stanzi, QB; Iowa: 6’4”, 230 lb. - Doesn’t “wow” you with anything in particular, but has the athletic ability and size to suggest a lot of potential at the next level. Could develop into a solid backup or even starter in the right system. 6. Zane Taylor, C; Utah: 6’3”, 310 lb. - First team All-MWC for the second straight season. Three year starter for the Utes. Former high school state wrestling champion and track and field champ, immensely strong, and smart (all-conference academic for the fourth straight year). Very athletic with a nasty on the field demeanor. 7. Robert Hughes, FB/RB; Notre Dame: 5’11”, 245 lb. - Former high school all-american at running back, Hughes is a punishing blocker and short yardage back with excellent receiving skills. Incredibly strong. Would fit in with the Chiefs offensive scheme perfectly and has played under Weis in college. His uncle, E.J. Jones, played for the Chiefs in 1985. He's a legacy. I'd be cool with this one. Maybe we could trade Seattle for Okung and make it perfect?

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to offend anyone who thinks that Richardson or O'Murphy were solid, positively contributing right tackles. Or that we've tapped into the Howard Hughes cryogenetics lab and have figured out a way to clone Casey Wiegmann every seven years so we never have to draft or acquire a center until the sun swallows the earth in 4.2 billion years.

What about the extra 5th or 6th rounder we get from New England?

I think several of these players would be taken ahead of where you have them slated, especially Powe. Don't know much about Pettis either.
Otherwise, it is a good mock. If it came down like that, we would be very lucky. Every need filled.

Von Miller could go really early, perhaps top ten, or be available when the Chiefs pick. Crap shoot, but if he isn't there, the Chiefs have a lot of different options at that point. Wide out, defensive tackle, another OLB, quarterback, offensive tackle, center... Pettis is a stud. Runs really great routes, catches everything thrown to him, etc. This years Austin Collie. Not super fast on paper, but put some pads on the guy and put him against somebody on the field and he is going to make someone look stupid. |

The Albert-Gilbert Tackle bookends. Sounds kind of unique.

that looks like a great draft...those are exactly our needs right down to the rb...
as mentioned, i think it's dicey that powe lasts... but if miller is gone, there is Houston from Georgia (had a breakout year in first year of 3-4, but not really sure what his upside is) or a WR... if we're drafting in the 20's and walked out with Miller/Powe we know Pioli is blessed...

With the Texans moving to a 3-4 I think Miller is long gone before the Chiefs are on the clock.
