Why or I guess "How" is the NFL considered to be a non-profit organization?
How is this possible when they're the only professional sports team that has this status (as far as I know - MLB, NBA, NHL do not) ??? This is a league that generates more than $9B a year in revenue.

If this has been explained in the NFL game fixing thread, sorry - I don't really feel like searching for the answer in that thread. I was just having a conversation w/ my dad and he mentioned this to me. He also said when opposing teams come into town and rent hotels etc, the league can write that off as well as well as other "travel" expenses.

Is this true?

People always have trouble distinguishing between "not for profit" and "don't make any money." Nonprofit organizations can make millions of dollars, but they just can't pay whatever they make out to shareholders or owners in any way. They can only pay expenses and salaries.

In this case, the NFL doesn't have shareholders, and all they do is pay the salaries of their staff (which are obviously quite high for high-ranking guys like Goodell). Also, keep in mind that the NFL doesn't make nearly as much money as the teams themselves do.

The teams pay taxes, it's just the NFL head office that doesn't .... I think.

i don't think losing the tax exemption would tear it down ... just going to screw with the money balance again.
