Patriots to release Brandon Lloyd

Brandon Lloyd reportedly was willing to take a pay cut to stay with the New England Patriots. Apparently, it won't be enough to keep him around.

The Boston Herald reported Saturday that the Patriots will release Lloyd after only one season with the team. NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported that it's possible Lloyd will return at a lesser salary. Lloyd was due a $3 million roster bonus after a season in which Lloyd caught 74 passes for 911 yards and four touchdowns, but it was clear he wasn't going to get that bonus.

Lloyd didn't provide the vertical threat that the Patriots were hoping for, and there were reports that his erratic behavior was not a great fit in the locker room. His potential future in New England could depend on what else the Patriots get accomplished in free agency. Lloyd would be the best available free agent wide receiver, but that's not saying much. The next best might be another Patriot -- Julian Edelman.

The team has yet to extend an offer sheet to Pittsburgh Steelers restricted free agent Emmanuel Sanders, although that is expected to happen. The team also added Danny Amendola and Donald Jones in free agency, but lost Wes Welker. If Lloyd is let go, the team is extremely thin at wide receiver.

I can't wait until Brady retires and the toxic ass "Patriot Way" burns a hole in New England the same way it did in Kansas City when Pioli tried to implement it

I just wonder if BB is going to retire same year as Tom Brady?

So the Patriots think they can just dump their top two WR and get away with it?

Dumping Lloyd and Welker in the same offseason is not going to have good results.

And they dumped Woodhead.

Belichick told Dimitroff to not trade up for Julio and instead sit back and take Baldwin because he was just as talented.

Maybe we could trade Baldwin for the Pats 1st.

I can believe this since Pioli took Baldwin instead of Kaepernick. I'm sure that gem came straight from Hoodie's mouth.

yeah but they got Leon Washington. Hes more like in the mold of kevin faulk. I agree though, replacing welker and lloyd with the injury prone danny amendola cant make tom too happy.

Tom Brady don't care. They've always done this. They still have the 2 TE's and whatever WR's they throw in there will look a lot better than they are.

I'll take a pass on Lloyd...

We dont need all of his weirdo idiosyncracies in the lockerroom
He's old
Has never been fast
Has a well earned rep for dropping easy catches

Lets just draft a talented young player or pick one up in free agency and stay away from guys who cant seem to stick ANYWHERE.

So Lloyd was a one year rental?

Sounds about right. Go look at his career history; he only lasts 1-3 years with every team...and he's going on to his 7th team, too.

Lloyd has had decent production almost everywhere he has gone. I don't understand why he can't find a home.

This.

The guy give 110% of effort on the field. He has some of the best catches I've ever seen. He'll lay out for every pass. Not sure why he bounces from team to team. He's 31 and is from Kansas City. I'd give him a looksy

He's from KC. I'm sure he'd like to play for Reid in his home town. 1-year deal? Bowe and Lloyd outside, Avery in the slot, Baldwin in spread sets (unless he earns more), and McCluster as the gadget player.

Course I wouldn't pay much for him, but for cheap I wouldn't turn him down.

Why would you put your 1 deep threat in the slot?
