If it was the mid-80's. I'll record it and watch it just because....... to see if anything cool happens.

It's like Leno himself said, he's gotten old. He doesn't use twitter, can't do comedy sketches with Timberlake etc.slow jam the news, no way.

The Tonight Show was such a big deal when I was a kid, and now it's totally irrelevant. I don't think it's just a Jay Leno thing, but I'm curious about what happened. Is it the advance of cable and a zillion channels? A decline in interest in talk shows? A decline in interest in celebrity gawking? I'm really curious.

Or perhaps I'm just reflecting my own perceptions, I guess. But seeing this thread supports my observation.

Carson was the best. He held court in a way these people can't.

This

Carson was must see tv and was always entertaining.

Jay Leno is entertaining in an "Americas funniest videos host" kinda way.

By far. None of these guys could even compete with Johnny. His stuff was funny as hell and a considerable portion of his stuff was not even scripted. IMO he could come up with better stuff off the top of his head than the other guys can pull off of their scripts. One of a kind that will never be replaced.

Leno was the best prepared from the POV of preparing each day reading up on current events and the guest bios.

Carson was the best prepared from the POV of being talented enough to be prepared for anything.

The AVClub summed up Carson's edge with the one quote everyone uses to imitate him 'I did not know that.' He could express a midwestern wonder and interest that pulled the audience in with him in any situation. Kind of a non-reeruned version of Huell Howser.

The only late night host I've seen come close to Carson is Craig Ferguson. He has a wacky sense of humor like Johnny, but it fits modern late night TV sensibilities. His monologues drift off and away from (I think) the script for the show if, in fact, it exists. His interviewing skills are top notch. He puts people at ease and draws them out. You'll find yourself being entertained by celebrities that you had no affection for at all. Off the top of my head I'd rate Ferguson as the best. I have no idea if he's ready for an earlier show but I'd watch him.
