How do I find a word document that I downloaded from my email and hit control save? I didn't hit save as.

Probably either 'My Documents' a folder in your profile [Users folder on Disk] or Downloads. Those may show up as 'Folders' in Explorer

Find another email with an attachment. Save as and see where the default save location is. You should see your earlier file there.
