Unreal Estate Round 2, Heat 11 (Final Heat): AK, MN, NJ, NM, SD
Okay, almost done with Round 2 as we narrow the field. Five strong homesteads to choose from.

Ok, I am not 100% sure, but was that St. Paul house the winner for Minnesota? I remember a pretty sweet place in Minneapolis that I thought won it, but I could be mistaken.
From these choices, New Mexico is the easy winner. Alaska is nice, as is Jersey, but they can't compete with the Las Cruces place. |

I wish there were more picture of the SD house. I might have voted for it, but that NM pad is pretty sweet.

My rankings:
Minnesota - Let's get this out of the way first. Winter is going to be cold there. That said, the house is nice and pretty darn big, and it's close to a great place to go running in a parka. There are restaurants not too far away as well. This house is a winner. New Mexico - I'm intrigued, very intrigued. I like New Mexico and this is a nice house. But it's not convenient to trails (albeit near a zillion miles of wilderness) and the restaurants are a bit distant. Plus you'll have illegal immigrants camping in your yard all the time. New Jersey - It's a nice house. There's not a great outdoor space, but you can kind of get to restaurants and Philadelphia isn't far away. I guess I could go running in the indoor swimming pool. Alaska - Nice house. It's not huge, but it's nice. However, it's almost an hour and a half from Anchorage, and if I go out for a run a bear is guaranteed to eat me. Living in rural Alaska sounds neat, but I bet it's less fun than we think. South Dakota - It's got some good access to a wilderness area, but the house doesn't wow me and the location isn't otherwise good. You'll get cold winters without much to offset them. Pass.

What I've learned from these threads is that Rainman has completely different needs in a home than I do. He is always commenting on proximity to restaurants and access to trails. Those two items are very low on my priority list. I prefer to be further off the beaten path and I have an exercise room with a treadmill for running.
Outdoor entertaining space and views are important to me. Views being important probably sounds funny coming from someone who lives in bum **** Kansas, but if I had to stare at somebody else's backyard all the time, I'd hang myself. |

New Mexico. Love the theater room and overall decor. Too bad it's in the desert, though. I prefer green.

They're all nice but none of them wow me.
New Mexico is easily the best but I agree with ThaVirus about the view. There's much better scenery in the state.

Yeah, get up to Santa Fe and even parts of ABQ and you get the Rockies in the background so that's a plus. But as far as deserts go, that's a pretty nice one.

I was born in ABQ, some of my family is still there, it's also the nicest house. I was intrigued by the 20 acres in SD but it's the New Mexico house for me.

If I'm living in Alaska, I damn well better have more than .99 acres.

Las Cruces is beautiful and that's probably going to be far enough away from the border that you can't actually see the wall once it gets built, so win/win there.
I liked the Alaska house but this one was fairly easy when all was said and done. Sucks being that close to the border but the NM house is a runaway favorite, IMO.
